Today this capital of the tiny province of Medelpad is known as "Stone City," and the buildings in the heart of Sundsvall appear just as they did at the end of the 19th century.
Sundsvall then languished in obscurity until the 19th century, when timber barons moved in and launched it on the road to prosperity.
