Topic: Sunflower (album)

  Sunflower Album Discography
Sunflower was a Los Angeles, California-based label that operated from 1970 to 1972.
Although Sunflower issued less than 30 singles, and the album output was limited to less than a dozen items, the artist roster was quite interesting.
The Daddy Dewdrop album, which followed the successful single, was a light-hearted, if not lightweight, effort that sealed the fate of Daddy Dewdrop as a one-hit wonder, never to be heard from again.

After Reprise rejected what was to be their debut album for the label, the Beach Boys re-entered the studio to begin work on what would become a largely different set of songs.
Sunflower is also a remarkably cohesive album, something not seen from the Beach Boys since Pet Sounds.
As with that album, Sunflower earned critical raves in Britain but was virtually ignored in America.

This variation of the album was released by EMI subsidiary, Stateside Records, in November, 1970.
After Warner Bros. singed the band and rejected the "Add Some Music" album that the group submitted for release in the Spring of 1970, the group took the four best tracks from the planned Capitol album and included them on the reworked album, now titled "Sunflower".
This album was in fact a compliation reel of songs recorded during the sessions that became "Sunflower."

In the fall of 1970, after the commercial failure of the stellar Sunflower album, The Beach Boys hired Jack Rieley as their manager.
It outperformed Sunflower commercially, reaching #29 in the US (their first Top 40 album since Wild Honey) and #15 in the UK.

Sunflower is without a doubt one of the Beach Boys finest album; a near-flawless collection of satisfying rockers and jolting ballads that shows Brian Wilson and prominently the rest of the group reaching new pinnacles in their careers.
The album is rounded to a satisfying (and gratifying) conclusion with a trio of Brian Wilson numbers, two of which happen to be a couple of the best songs ever commited to record.
Sunflower showcases the best teamwork by the band, with great songs, such as "This Whole World," "Add Some Music," Brian and Bruce's "Dierdre," the ghostly wonderous "All I Wanna Do," and the masterpiece closer "Cool, Cool Water." This album is a must-hear for any Beach Boys fan.

Beach Boys: Sunflower/Surf's Up: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Sunflower marked a fresh start for the band as they left Capitol and established their own label with Reprise, eager to capitalize on the arrangement and recapture an audience that had deserted them.
But despite Sunflower's merits and critical acclaim, it was not a financial success, which didn't bode well as the inauguration of the Beach Boys' brand new era.
Content-wise, the album ostensibly addresses pressing environmental, social and health concerns, but songs like "Don't Go Near the Water" and "Lookin' at Tomorrow (A Welfare Song)" are as much a reflection upon the group's fortunes as they are upon the world's.

Production-wise, no other Beach Boys album can touch it and it is a landmark in that it was one of the first pop albums to be treated as such, not just as a hastily-packaged collection of recent singles.
Perhaps the optimistic feel of the album had something to do with their release from a tumultuous relationship with Capitol Records and the enthusiasm shown by Warners president, Mo Ostin.
‘Sunflower’ was, like most of their albums, not a success, reaching 151 on the Billboard Album Chart, though reacceptance from the counter-culture, thanks to a tour with the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan turning up at their shows, wasn’t far off.

Without the pressure of a label, Smith set out to record the album that he wanted to, and the result is his warmest and most compelling album.

There was much to rejoice in during 1969: Brian had a new baby daughter Wendy, Carl had become a father earlier in the year (to Jonah), the Capitol contract was almost over and the band were able to face the future with confidence, ease and high spirits.
SUNFLOWER, with its charming sleeve of The Beach Boys and some of their children relaxing on the grass, and filled with STUNNING music, was at last a reality, hitting the record shelves on 31 August.
This was the album’s third single in November 1970 and another flop.

 Beach Boys - Sunflower
The Beach Boys' Seventies output has gone in and out of print with more fluctuation than any other major catalog has had, and its only Top Twenty hits were sentimental remakes aimed at a summer-concert crowd more interested in fun fun fun classics than creative maturation.
Yet for a new generation of harmony-friendly alternative popsters, Seventies Beach Boys albums like Surf's Up and Love You are becoming sonic blueprints, akin to what early Velvet Underground LPs meant to the previous indie peer group.
Half of 1979's L.A. (Light Album) mimics M.I.U.'s bland filler, yet Dennis' gentle "Baby Blue," Carl's harmony-drenched "Good Timin'," Love's Japan-kitschy "Sumahama" and a demented eleven-minute disco reconstruction of Wild Honey's "Here Comes the Night" can now be heard as the band's final risky strokes.

 The Albums - Sunflower
Sunflower was probably the most underrated, and least promoted Beach Boys album of all time, which is why it only reached #151, the lowest position any Beach Boys album ever reached besides the M.I.U.album of 1978 which also reached #151.
By the same token, Sunflower contained some of the most beautiful music The Beach Boys ever recorded.
The song "Forever", sung by Dennis on this album and by John Stamos on the "Summer In Paradise" album of 1992 stands out as one of the classics.

In botanical terminology, a single daisy or sunflower for example, is not a flower but a flower head—an inflorescence comprised of numerous small flowers (sometimes called florets).
Instead the allergen is usually the pollen of the contemporary bloom of anemophilous ragweed (Ambrosia) which can drift for many kilometers.

Sunflower especially is a beautiful work, stocked with excellent harmonies and the best songs the group had written since Pet Sounds; British critics and fans even deemed it a worthy successor.
The album was released in the 70's, which was not their most popular decade, but strangely, it's one of my all-time favorites.
Sunflower is a wonderful, wonderful album and the best overall band effort, while Surf's Up is less consistent, yet host to some of the Beach Boys most extraordinary songs.

The album closes with the title track, which was dusted off from the legendary Smile sessions; this time, however, the results are much, much greater than Sunflower’s closer, Cool, Cool Water.
Also, many people have said this but I have to say it again; after Dennis Wilson’s fabulous outing on Sunflower, where he wrote the best 4 songs on the album and sang three of them, he’s nowhere to be found here.
This album should not be avoided though, it, and Sunflower, are perfect places to start exploring the Beach Boy’s forgotten catalogue.

The album is competently performed and the band is up with the times, but the material is not suited to them, and the singing is annoyingly raunchy.
It is a very strong album spesially leaving this town, trader,Only with you og Funky Pretty though Sail on Sailor is also briliant the other songs are very good to but those 5 i mentioned is the songs witch really stand out from the bunch in my opionon.
Even at the time the likes of 'Sunflower' and 'Surfs Up' were being issued, the group were in an uneasy position of selling a fraction of the records they did in the mid-Sixties, and therefore were seen as irrelevant at a time each and every single ex-beatle had chart topping solo records, for example.

The album has one of their best songs, "Flying Jelly Attack," which boasts a sing-song verse that goes, "I'm gonna eat jelly [x8] beans/you're gonna eat cherry [x8] drops." Yama is also where the idiosyncratic songwriting of bassist Michie Nakatani started to come into its own.
Her nervy, Talking Heads-esque arrangements on "Cannibal Papaya" and "Dali's Sunflower" are great counterparts to Yamano's straightforward leanings.
It's not a bad album by any means, but it lacks a good deal of the charm found on the band's previous discs.
