In Sunflower County in the early part of the twentieth century, according to anthropologist Hortense Powdermaker, "when a white man kills a Negro, it is hardly considered murder.
The sheriff of Sunflower County arrested Woods Eastland in September 1904 and charged him with "having caused Luther Holbert and wife to be burned at the stake." The state hinted that it would prosecute the case vigorously, and Eastland assembled a team of attorneys led by Anselm J. McLaurin.
Charles McLaurin, the civil rights worker whose report on Sunflower County referred to Doddsville as the place where "many years ago the burning of Negroes was a Sunday spectacle," moved to Sunflower County in 1962 explicitly to bring attention to injustices in Eastland's backyard.

In 1871, a large portion of the eastern area of the county was taken to assist in the formation of Leflore County, and its western and southern limits were extended at the expense of Bolivar and Washington counties.
On March 15, 1871, when a large portion of Sunflower County was cut off to form the new county of Leflore, the county seat was moved from McNutt to a new town to be called Johnsonville, at the junction of Mound Bayou with the Sunflower River.

She was instrumental in organizing Mississippi's "Freedom Summer" for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and later became the Vice-Chair of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, attending the 1964 Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in that capacity.
She was born in Montgomery County, Mississippi, on October 6, 1917, the youngest of 20 children as the granddaughter of slaves.
She ran for Congress in 1964 and 1965, and was eventually seated as a member of Mississippi's legitimate delegation to the Democratic National Convention of 1968, where she was an outspoken critic of the Vietnam War.
