Sunflowers is a series of still life oil paintings that the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh painted.
Among the Sunflowers paintings are three similar paintings with fifteen sunflowers in a vase, and two similar paintings with twelve sunflowers in a vase.
The paintings were innovative for their use of the yellow spectrum, partly because newly invented pigments made new colours possible.

In this lesson, van Gogh’s depiction of sunflowers is used as a means of focusing on the parts of a flower, growing sunflowers in the classroom, and developing students' artistic impressions of sunflowers.
Students should verbalize that the sunflowers in Van Gogh’s painting are in a vase and are therefore considerably "shorter" than a flower they might see in a garden.
Sunflowers are native plants of the North American prairie; One state where sunflowers would be found is Kansas.

 The Vincent van Gogh Gallery
The various paintings of Sunflowers and Vincent Van Gogh are a perfect example of this.
The colors are vibrant and express emotions typically associated with the life of sunflowers: bright yellows of the full bloom to arid browns of wilting and death; all of the stages woven through these polar opposites are presented.
The overall layout of the painting along with positioning of the actual sunflowers usually remains the same in the similar paintings.

The series of paintings was made possible by the innovations in manufactured pigments in the 19th Century.
These most famous of all sunflowers in art hold at their heart a simple parable about the brevity of life; they are at varying stages in the life cycle, from withered and wilting to vibrant full bloom.

This is clearly incorrect and misleading as they appear copied from the sunflowers which VAN GOGH had painted in August 1888 whilst it is widely known that he never met Agostina Segatori (his lover) again, after they had quarelled in the mid-1887.
As it is now clear enough that the Yasuda was painted by Gaugin, it is quite logical to suppose that Schuffenecker in 1900/1901 could have applied a dry transfer on the Yasuda left to him by Gaugin, exactly those modifications which he could comfortably observe in the Amsterdam version which he was restoring.

BBC - Painting the Weather - Sunflowers
These bright yellow sunflowers embody the light of the south of France, where Van Gogh had recently taken up residence.
Innovations in paint-making enabled him to use new chromium and cadmium yellows and the paint laid onto the canvas in thick strokes suggests three-dimensional flowers.
Traditionally in Dutch painting this is interpreted as representing the stages of human life.

The painting of sunflowers sold in London on March 30th 1987 is a weak copy of the work now exhibited by the National Gallery there, according to Benoit Landais who has pinpointed at least 12 flagrant mistakes in Mr Goto's acquisition.
It is still possible that Schuffenecker was in possession of a painting of sunflowers by Van Gogh but it might well be a version of the 12 sunflowers instead of the 14.
For a long time, the Museum was regarded as the sole authority regarding Van Gogh's paintings but with the catalogue raisonné and Mr Goto's piece being challenged it now faces the dire prospect of having to share its prerogatives with those nasty researchers or at least other specialists.

 Vincent Van Gogh - Sunflowers
Sunflowers is one of two paintings that Van Gogh created in his delight at having Gauguin come to join him in Arles.
Van Gogh described yellow as "the embodiment of the utmost clarity of love." This painting, done in January of 1889, exemplifies two important elements of Van Gogh's signature artistic style: an exaggeration of color and the humility of the peasant-like flowers.
He used color symbolically and heightened the effect of his paintings by exaggerating the descriptive colors, in the case of the Sunflowers, yellow.

While Carmel Mooney's landscape paintings and her volcanic series may sometimes veer towards abstraction, all of her work is in fact deeply rooted in close observation and an intimate knowledge of the subject.
Nowhere is this more evident than in her still life work, a discipline that she has returned to repeatedly over the past 20 years.
As the art critic Cyril Barrett observes in his 1993 essay 'Light and Space' (reproduced in the Gandon Editions book on Carmel Mooney), when as a student Carmel was presented with plastic oranges to copy for an exam she pursuaded the porter to go out and buy real ones.

 CNN - Van Gogh's 'Sunflowers' a fake? - Oct. 26, 1997
LONDON (CNN) -- One of Vincent Van Gogh's famous sunflower paintings, sold a decade ago for nearly $40 million, may be a fake painted by a struggling French art teacher, according to the British Sunday Times newspaper.
The newspaper reported that a yearlong investigation by British expert Geraldine Norman had concluded that the sunflower study attributed to the Dutch artist was "almost certainly" the work of Claude-Emile Schuffenecker, described as an embittered Parisian teacher who owned the painting when it surfaced at an exhibition in Paris in 1901.
The painting was sold by the Chester Beatty family in 1987 to Japan's Yasuda Fire and Marine Insurance Company for $39.5 million, and auctioneer Christie's said in a statement that it saw no reason "to alter our original opinion that the 'Sunflowers' is an authentic work by Van Gogh."

Professor Lars Chittka said: "The results show that the flower paintings have captured the essence of floral features from a bee's point of view, and that these features are recognised by bees that have never been exposed to flowers before.
This could be why the bees were strongly drawn to the blue "Vincent" signature in Van Gogh's painting, as well as the blue blooms in A Vase of Flowers, and a light blue square in Still Life with a Beer Mug.

Norman especially faults the Amsterdam museum for not giving her "access to several crucial documents that describe the original marketing of the paintings," such as the inventory and account book of van Gogh's sister-in-law, Johanna, whose efforts put the artist on the map after he died.

Professor Welsh-Ovcharov's view of the Yasuda Sunflowers is "that it was painted on a plain-weave coarse sacking or jute canvas of a type used for several paintings produced by Gauguin and Vincent in Arles between November-December 1888." Gauguin bought 20 meters of the cheap canvas, which both the artists liked.
