		Without really trying, Sunn O))) have become the literati's living embodiment of metal, transcending their origins (and intentions) as an Earth tribute band and becoming the rulers of a scene most people didn't even know existed.
		As with all of Sunn O)))'s previous work, Black One carries with it an overwhelming air of ceremony, both in terms of the group's chosen genre and the fl/death metal realm from which so much of their inspiration is derived.
		Though their guttural, quavering tales of malice are barely audible beneath the billowing fl soot that sprays from O'Malley and Anderson's amps, they add a sickening new dimension to the band's assault, as do fiendish contributions from power electronics brute John Wiese and drone guitar demigod Oren Ambarchi.

		Sunn 0)) is easily the most inaccessible of all the groups either of these guys have been involved in, and if you have heard Khanate, that statement could seem somewhat surprising.
		Sunn 0)) do not hide the fact that they are directly influenced by Earth, and in fact the band pays homage to what they see as the masters of the drone sound, with the last track being named after the founder of Earth, Dylan Carlson.
		I hope on their next album SUNN O))) will explore that direction even more, since obviously it is the path they need to take in order avoid repeating themselves.

		After so much hype, the long awaited collaboration between Sunn O))) and Boris was bound to disappoint.
		A powerful drone that is encapsulates both the amplifier worship of Boris and of Sunn O))), it is a promising start to the album to say the least.
		At eight minutes it’s far too short, Boris bring the lighter parts of their Pink album to the table and Sunn O))) shockingly add to the melodies with subtle beauty.

		As if Sunn O)), Burning Witch, and Khanate were not enough, Southern Lord has drawn down into the deepest well of souls to conjure forth this platter of annihilation and crippling destruction.
		Granted, this is not as noise racketing and scathing as Khanate, but lies somewhere in the middle of the grey endless void of Burning Witch, Sunn O)), Cathedral, Earth, and the Melvins that Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine find their own necromantic glory.
		Also, the drone that permeates through Sunn O)) recordings is certainly prevelant and dominant here, except there is some beating battery destruction to give it structure and layers through Justin Greaves.

		For those unfamiliar The Grimm Robe Demos were the very first recordings (circa 1998) made by the core Sunn O))) line-up of O'Malley (Khanate), Anderson (Goatsnake) and accompanied by Bootsy Kronos (Burning Witch) on bass.

		The guys finished up and we all relaxed with some birthday drinks for Jus with the rowdy bar as Dismember, insanely drunk, managed to play a set that was almost inhumanly tight for a bunch of guys who were that drunk.
		It was a great night and after yet another pack of the van we all headed down the highway to Wollongong to stay at Log bassist Amos' house (along with Pino, Dave and several others whom sacrificed their downstairs loungeroom to us for a couple of nights).

		The total running time may clock in at over an hour but damn you all if you think there's a dozen tracks.....actually there's only 1/4th of that here.
		Around the 5 minute mark, things start to sound like they might belong to a score for a thriller (ie, the Shining or something of that nature).

		There's not much metal in these compositions on the surface even though the traces are clearly there.
		Sunn O))) pretty much started off as nothing but an Earth tribute band and while I think Earth second relese (Earth 2) is incredible I feel Sunn O))) have conquered that release and extended the boundaries for drone.
		The raw heaviness of it is almost like being in a religious trance or an out of body experience, Very primal and ancient, I somehow feel the ancient civilizations worshipped their Gods while listening to something like this.
