Sunny Day Real Estate formed in 1992 and while this band was from Seattle WA, they really weren't the typical band most people would think of coming from there.
Sunny Day Real Estate's original line up for their debut album was: Jeremy Enigk: guitar & main vocals, Dan Hoerner: guitar & some vocals, Nate Mendel: bass and William Goldsmith: drums.
Sunny Day Real Estate had begun a national tour at this time, but the tour was not going well and when the band had returned to Seattle, Jeremy then announced his new found interest in God/religion.

Sunny Day Real Estate: The Rising Tide (2000): Reviews
It is a strange album for Sunny Day in that it lingers in an abstract realm that the band previously only hinted at....
It's as if SDRE was trying to make every album it thought Rush should have cut after Moving Pictures - simultaneously dark, textural, riff-based and cliche-free, yet filled with the sort of sweeping gestures and lofty arrangements you usually find in vintage prog.
SDRE has always flirted with prog-rock machinations, but some of these songs are just too over the top to be written off as experiments in musical nostalgia.

In June, Sunny Day Real Estate - the trio of Goldsmith, Dan Hoerner on guitar, and the charismatic singer/lyricist Jeremy Enigk - released their fifth album, The Rising Tide.
Unfortunately, there's stuff that Sunny Day did - before we were even Sunny Day, that was never even recorded - that was completely insane and totally chaotic.
Sunny Day Real Estate are currently on tour in support of The Rising Tide.

Sunny Day Real Estate was not a band I had even heard of during the 90's.
Sunny Day Real Estate are all about putting their feelings down in music, and both Jeremy and the band succeed beyond this, making a very inspirational and classic sound to go along with it.
SDRE is more visceral, immediate in its reaction, whereas "How it Feels" is almost intellectual, at times distant, yet its own reward in the complexity of its music.

Sunny Day Real Estate : Diary - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Sunny Day Real Estate's debut album, Diary, virtually defined emo in the '90s, laying much of the groundwork (along with Weezer) for the genre's end-of-decade indie prominence.
SDRE's song structures are far more oblique than, for example, the similarly anthemic Pearl Jam, but it's still easy to miss the group's main inspirations if you're not looking for them.
For one, there are plenty of quiet, arpeggiated passages and contrasting dynamics; for another, vocalist Jeremy Enigk is more of a crooner than a screamer at heart, and the underlying tenderness in his voice breathes majesty into the group's slow, languid melodies.

Most of the songs from the new album were represented live, and the band went for a balance of older songs from both of the older discs.

Harmony Central®: Album Review: Sunny Day Real Estate - The Rising Tide   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
The disc opens with "Killed by an Angel," which kicks off with a rising drumbeat and guitar line reminiscent of Rush's "Working Man." Whether it be on the more intricate progressions of "Fool in the Photograph" or the lilting acoustic strains of "Rain Song," Sunny Day Real Estate keeps the homage to Rush fairly consistent.
Sunny Day Real Estate's resurrection of Rush's '70s vibe gives the disc undertones of art-rock (or prog rock) bands of the era, including King Crimson and Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
Depending on your taste, The Rising Tide could either be a welcome rehash of a long bygone era or a reminder of why prog rock has gone the way of the dinosaurs.
