Sunol is a large protected parcel of land, with a plethora of plant communities, and plenty of trails through varied terrain.
Hikes from Sunol can be extended east all the way to Del Valle Regional Park, and west to Mission Peak Regional Preserve (permit required for Ohlone Wilderness Trail).
Inside Sunol, there are plenty of loop hikes, but if you haven't visited the preserve before, consider choosing a medium-length trek.

The obvious approach seems to be to buy the Sunol map from BAOC, and use it to navigate to the box, after learning the necessary orienteering skills (I cannot scan the entire map due to copyright rules).
Another possible approach would be to note that the boulder, as measured off the full map, is 1583m at 42 degrees from a circle at the end of the road.

Saturday morning at Sunol Regional Wilderness, the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker remained notably absent.
No sign of the Pileated Woodpecker along the Tres Sendas Trail in Redwood Regional Park (Oakland Hills) this afternoon in spite of many searchers; the roadside parking area at Waterloo and Skyline Blvd was packed.

Today at Sunol Regional Wilderness, the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker continued in the oaks to the right of the Wilderness Room(?), the cabin with the deck out back.
The bird was located on a snag in a group of eucalyptus trees at the intersection of the West Ridge Trail and the paved road leading to the back of the Science Center.
Perhaps this is the same bird that in previous years nested in spot easily observed from the footbridge.

Luckily we all followed my sage advice of starting early in the morning --- but the end of the hike it was in the low 90's (33C) and we'd finished off all the water we brought.
