 The Oda Generals
He was supported as heir to the Oda house by Shibata Katsuie and defied a request by Hideyoshi to release Sambôshi (the late Oda Nobutada's son) into his custody.
He was briefly besieged at Gifu, then commited suicide when he learned that Shibata Katsuie had taken his own life following the Battle of Shizugatake.
He is said to have been of particular use to Hideyoshi in his construction of the 'One Night Castle' at Sunomata in 1567, though if this incident even occured is a matter of debate among historians.

How many castles in Japan ? [Archive] - Japan Forum
However, I was surprised to find Gifu castle among average sized castles in Maciamo's list.
The location if Gifu castle is very nice, but the building itself is rather small (only 3 floors) and the premises don't spread all around with huge moats and stone walls very far from the dungeon, like Edo, Osaka Castle or the likes.
Especially Azuchi castle which was only around for 3 years before Nobunaga was killed and the castle mysteriously burned to the ground...it's ruins are just south of Hikone.
