Sunscreen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sunscreen (also known as sunblock, suncream, suntan lotion) is a lotion, spray or other topical product that helps protect the skin from the sun's ultraviolet radiation, and which reduces sunburn and other skin damage, ultimately leading to a lower risk of skin cancer.
Most sunscreens work by containing either an organic chemical compound that absorbs ultraviolet light (such as oxybenzone) or an opaque material that reflects light (such as titanium dioxide, zinc oxide), or a combination of both.
Dosing for sunscreen can be calculated using the formula for body surface area and subsequently subtracting the area covered by clothing.

sunscreen   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The reason to use sunscreen at all in children is that two thirds of a person's total lifetime sun exposure comes in the first 18 years of life.
The result of excessive exposure and especially sunburn in early years is a greatly increased risk of skin cancers in late adulthood, as well as the cosmetic damage to the skin that the sun's ultraviolet rays inflict.
It has been said in the past that sunscreens should not be used on babies under 6 months, but there is really no lower age limit.

Wear Sunscreen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wear Sunscreen is the common name of an essay, (actually called "Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young") written by Mary Schmich and published in the Chicago Tribune as a column in 1997.
In her introduction to the column, she described it as the commencement address she would give if she were asked to give one.
Soon it became the subject of an urban legend, according to which it was originally an MIT commencement speech given by author Kurt Vonnegut in the same year (which was false) and by the year of 1999 it was already widespread.

Sunscreen Use Reduces Kids' Moles, Maybe Melanomas
To find out if using sunscreen could reduce the number of moles children develop when they are exposed to the sun, researchers asked parents of children in one group to use the supply of sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 that they gave them.
These parents were asked to apply the sunscreen when their child was expected to be in the sun for at least 30 minutes.
A second group of parents received no sunscreen for their children and was given no advice about sunscreen use, but these parents could use sunscreen on their children on their own if they wanted.

 Sunscreen
A sunscreen’s SPF number effectively means how much longer you can stay in the Sun compared to not wearing any sunscreen at all.
Typically, water-resistant sunscreens lose their SPF after 40 minutes in the water; waterproof sunscreens after 90 minutes.
Applying sunscreen early ensures that it is absorbed by the skin and is less likely to wash off when you perspire.

As with adult formulas, kids' sunscreens should contain UVA protection, but in the form of titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which is gentler on kids' skin than avobenzone.
Sunscreen reviews also point out that most children's sunscreens are no different than those for adults, except for added fragrance that can actually irritate kids' more-sensitive skin.
The sunscreen is waterproof, and comes in SPF 15, 30 and 50.

Sunscreen and sun care by Elta
Sunscreens are chemicals which absorb the ultraviolet (UV) rays.
Therefore, physical blocks, especially zinc oxide, are much more effective than chemical sunscreens in blocking UV-A rays and should be an important component of any sunblock.
Some scientists believe one reason is the sunscreens stop UV-B rays from burning, so people stay in the sun longer, thinking they are protected.

Daily Sunscreen Use Prevents Precancerous Spots
One group was instructed to apply a water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 16 each morning to their head, neck, arms, and hands, and the other group was told to use sunscreen at their own discretion.
People who used sunscreen daily developed significantly fewer SKs than the occasional sunscreen users, and the protective effects of daily sunscreen use were especially strong in the first two and a half years of the study.
For example, the increase in SK counts from 1992 to 1994 in the group that used sunscreen daily was about 24% lower than the increases found in the occasional-use group.

As a general rule, babies six months of age or younger should not have sunscreen applied to their skin because their bodies may not be capable of tolerating the chemicals in sunscreens.
Everyone over six months of age should use a sunscreen regularly unless they and their doctors decide it would be better to protect the skin in other ways.
The FDA will also no longer permit a product to be called "sunblock." (Sunscreens don't block out all of the sun's rays.) Manufacturers must also list the active sunscreen ingredients in their products on the label.

 Sunscreens, sunblocks. DermNet NZ
The difference between a SPF 15 and a SPF 30 sunscreen may not have a noticeable difference in actual use as the effectiveness of a sunscreen has more to do with how much of it is applied, how often it is applied, whether the person is sweating heavily or being exposed to water.
However, most people apply their sunscreen at about one third the thickness used for testing; they fail to apply it to all exposed areas of skin; and they forget to reapply it every couple of hours.
It takes 20-30 minutes for sunscreen to be absorbed by the skin and it can be rubbed off very easily, so apply it at least half an hour before going out in the sun.
