Sunset may not be as obsessed with the topic as something like The Big Picture, but it delved into that subject in a vicious way.
Sunset Boulevard appears in an aspect ratio of 1.33:1 on this single-sided, double-layered DVD; due to those dimensions, the image has not been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.
Sunset Boulevard comes to DVD in great shape, and I highly recommend this terrific movie and solid disc.

Gillis describes Norma Desmond's mansion, where most of the film's action transpires, as "crumbling apart in slow motion." It's a monument to the forgotten, and on film the shadows in which Desmond dwells appear to have a life of their own; in the digital version they are clean, still and cold.

Sunset Boulevard isn't without pathos, most notably in Erich von Stroheim's protective butler who wants only to shield his mistress from the stark truths that are massing against her.
Gloria Swanson had only made one movie since 1934, similar to the Norma character, but her career did make a modest comeback in later years and she was in 5 more movies after the present success.
The movie is fine, and I admire the Billy Wilder's writers imagination - it is in fact about a writer, but I thought that the movie set in a decaying mansion on Sunset Boulevard, with the rats in the swimming pool and all the decay, was off putting.

That said, the movie is a wonderful, yet sad look into the private life of a movie star who is "still proudly waving to a parade that has long since passed." High melodrama with Gloria Swanson hamming it up every chance she gets.

There's a scene in "Sunset Boulevard" in which washed-up movie star Norma Desmond (Petula Clark), believing she's about to make a new film after all these years, pumps her fists in excitement; they do the jumping up and down that aging Norma no longer can.
Two subplots add texture, as they did in the movie: the story of Norma's butler, Max von Meyer-ling (Allen Fitzpatrick), and his devotion to her; and the burgeoning collaboration and romance between Joe and aspiring young screenwriter Betty Schaefer (Sarah Uriarte Berry).
Max makes it possible for Norma to continue believing she is the star she once was; he is in awe not of the illusion but the tenacity with which she clings to it.

Wilder was a genius and he proved it in almost every movie he made.
As for Sunset Blvd. I think it's not only Wilder's best, but one of the greatest films ever made, it has a spot firmly in my top 10.
The other Wilder movies I have seen are also ones that I like a lot: Double Indemnity and Witness For The Prosecution.
