Sunset District (San Francisco) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Sunset District is a neighborhood in the west-central part of San Francisco, California, USA that is primarily residential and is built along a grid pattern.
It was one of the last areas of San Francisco to be developed, and most of its homes and buildings date from the 1920s through the 1950s, with the fastest rate of construction occurring during the 1930s and 1940s (although parts of the Inner Sunset were developed beginning in the 1890s).
The Sunset District's southern and eastern borders are not as clearly defined, but there is a general consensus that the neighborhood extends no further than Sigmund Stern Grove and Sloat Boulevard in the south and no further east than the Parnassus campus of the University of California, San Francisco and Laguna Honda Hospital.

Sunset - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The color of a sunset may be enhanced by atmospheric phenomena such as clouds, smoke and smog produced by natural processes or human activity, and by ash from volcanic eruptions.
The timing of sunset varies with the time of year and the latitude of the location from which it is viewed (and, in local time, with the location's precise longitude).
Changes in timing of sunset are driven by the axial tilt of Earth and the planet's movement around its orbit, however in the Northern Hemisphere (for example), the earliest sunset is not at the winter solstice around December 21, but rather in early December.

 Encyclopedia of San Francisco
San Francisco's "Sunset District" is bordered on the north by Lincoln Way, on the west by the Great Highway, on the south by Sloat Boulevard, and on the east by a vague boundary going south from Arguello, Golden Gate Heights, the hill above Kezar Stadium, Golden Gate Heights, and 15th Avenue.
Nevertheless, the City and Country of San Francisco, which was growing rapidly, desired the land and petitioned for it in the 1850s.
Sunset streets running east to west were originally named for the letters of the alphabet, starting in the Richmond District with A (later Anza) Street and ending with the Sunset's X (later changed to Yorba-for Y) Street.

Sunset, also called sundown in some American English dialects, is the time at which the Sun disappears below the horizon in the west.
As sunrise and sunset are calculated from the leading and trailing edges of the Sun, and not the center; this slightly increases the duration of "day" relative to "night".
The red-hued sky at sunset is explained by the phenomenon of Rayleigh scattering.

The Sunset District's southern and eastern borders are not as clearly defined, but there is a general consensus that the neighborhood extends no further than Stern Grove and Sloat Boulevard in the south and no further east than the Parnassus campus of the University of California, San Francisco and Laguna Honda Hospital.
Considered by many to be one of the least desirable neighborhoods in San Francisco due to its frequently foggy weather and the monotony of its mid-20th century single-family housing stock, the neighborhood nonetheless has seen its property values rise along with those in the rest of San Francisco, most spectacularly during the late 1990s.
A large percentage of the Sunset's residents are Asian-American (mostly Chinese-American), a result of a demographic shift that began in the 1960s as Asian immigration to San Francisco increased dramatically and many of the original, mostly white residents of the Sunset moved to outlying suburban areas.

When the exposition was over and the crowds had gone, it all came down again, leaving only one magnificent remnant: Bay Area architect Bernard Maybeck's Palace of Fine Arts, a large exhibition space crowned with a big orange-rose dome and backed by a curving sweep of monumental columns, each capped with a weeping maiden.
