Topic: Sunset Tunnel

Encyclopedia of San Francisco   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
San Francisco's "Sunset District" is bordered on the north by Lincoln Way, on the west by the Great Highway, on the south by Sloat Boulevard, and on the east by a vague boundary going south from Arguello, Golden Gate Heights, the hill above Kezar Stadium, Golden Gate Heights, and 15th Avenue.
Sunset streets running east to west were originally named for the letters of the alphabet, starting in the Richmond District with A (later Anza) Street and ending with the Sunset's X (later changed to Yorba-for Y) Street.
Building in the Sunset began primarily in the eastern section, which was more accessible from the city center, and the outer Sunset, which people could reach from the south (and also provided "beachfront homes.") The Central Ocean Toll Road appears on early maps.

 Canal Tunnels of London
Islington Tunnel was opened in 1820 along with the completion of the canal, a procession of boats passing through with a band playing, to be met by a salute of cannon fire as they emerged at the eastern end.
Tunnels were built by the process of sinking shafts at intervals to the required depth, and then lowering men and equipment down to dig, and, it was hoped, meet.
The tunnel was at first operated by "legging", whereby men lying on their backs on planks aboard the boat walked the vessel through against the side walls.

San Francisco Neighborhoods: Outer Sunset and West Portal
The Outer Sunset's main retail drag is on Irving Street, between 19th and 27th avenues, while the Parkside's is along Taraval Street, roughly between 15th and 30th avenues, continuing with lower density practically to Ocean Beach.
Although Sunset is heavily trafficked, it's also heavy with trees and grass that separate nonmotorized travelers from the cars, making it a great walking, biking or jogging route.
Sunset Boulevard: This classic divided boulevard is planted on both sides with trees and grass; it's a good north-south biking or jogging route and an ideal access route for Golden Gate Park or Lake Merced (between Lincoln Boulevard and Lake Merced Boulevard).
