 COMPANY NEWS; Pillsbury Sues Sunshine Biscuits - New York Times
The Pillsbury Company today sued a rival baker, Sunshine Biscuits Inc., contending that the Hydrox cookie maker's Drox character infringed Pillsbury's longtime trademark, the Doughboy.
The suit, filed in Federal Court, seeks to stop Sunshine from using the Drox character, and to collect damages and recover legal costs.
Officials of Sunshine Biscuits, a G. Industries subsidiary based in Woodbridge, N.J., could not be reached for comment.

The popularity of Sunshine Biscuits grew rapidly and expanded into the Northeast with the opening of a Boston bakery in 1908 and Sunshine's famous "Thousand Window Bakery" in Long Island City, New York in 1912.
Animal crackers and the circus were so intertwined in the public's mind that when Sunshine introduced their Popeye cookies they first advertised the new product in Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus program for the 1936 season.
Prior to Popeye cookies, Sunshine produced their own brand of circus animal cookies and had even made Andy Gump Biscuits based on the Sidney Smith comic strip which was enormously popular in the '20s.

BRAINTREE -- Joseph Roger Apollo, a retired salesman for the former Sunshine Biscuits, died July 23 in his home in Braintree.
He worked at Sunshine Biscuits in Natick for over 30 years, selling cookies and crackers to local retailers.
Apollo worked for the Independent Taxi Owners Association as a cab driver throughout his career, and was a chauffeur at the Doubletree hotel in Dorchester for the past three years.

Early in 1996, Elmhurst, Ill.-based Keebler was sold by United Biscuits to INFLO Holding Corp., a joint venture of Flowers Industries, Inc. and Artal Luxembourg S.A. In the process, Keebler shed its snack food segment to concentrate on cookies and crackers.
