Sunshine Pop - music to make you smile!
A former member of the 1960s pop group Millennium, Lee released a solo album entitled "Many Are The Times"and an album recorded during a live performance in Japan with fellow Millennium artist, Joey Stec, called "Japan." His recent passing was a tragic loss for the SPM family and for the music world.
This is the story of the 'West Coast Soft Pop' scene (or 'Sunshine Pop' as it is often referred) as told through the finest artists and records of the genre...
Now 30 years later the sunshine pop/soft rock genre is fast becoming a collector's paradise as new generations fall in love with the sunniest sounds around.

Sunshine Pop Downloads - Download Sunshine Pop Music - Download Sunshine Pop MP3s
Sunshine pop often resembled the more elaborate and melancholy baroque pop style, though it could also cross into folk-pop or Brill Building pop.
Formed primarily for the purpose of starring in a television series, the Monkees were on one hand a cynically manufactured group, devised to cash in on the early Beatles' success by applying the most superficial aspects of the British Invasion formula to capture a preteen audience.
That album was one of the finest examples of what later became known as "sunshine pop," and it's still one of the best harmony vocal showcases in 1960s music.

Sunshine pop - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sunshine pop, also known as sunshine rock, is a musical movement that incorporated much of the lighter rock music from the United States Of America, and particularly California in the mid to late 60s and early into the 1970s.
The mid 60s saw a number of big hits from bands that are normally associated with the genre such as Cherish by The Association, Up, Up and Away by The Fifth Dimension and California Dreaming by The Mamas and the Papas.
The Beach Boys (not generally known as a Sunshine Pop group but at least parts of their 1965-1971 work can be regarded as in the genre)

Sunshine (1999): Ralph Fiennes, Rosemary Harris, Jennifer Ehle, Rachel Weisz - PopMatters Film Review
As expansive as it is personal, Sunshine is the product of Szabo's own familial history — learned by listening to his grandfather's stories for hours on hours — and the tumultuous political tide of Hungary during the 20th century.
He originally wrote Sunshine in Hungarian and his early version was considerably longer, before a decision was made to translate the script to English and condense the script, for more "universal" appeal.
Sunshine easily could have stretched (and possibly did in early drafts) into a six- or nine-hour mini-series.

In keeping with the spirit of the times, J.P. Sunshine was as much a scene as it was a band; its members congregated in Duffell and Morphin's apartment to listen to the latest American imports (Love, Jefferson Airplane, Captain Beefheart, the Grateful Dead, among others) and to ingest chemicals.
J.P. Sunshine's informal, proto-lo-fi identity especially suited Goodway and Rickell since it served as a recreational project away from their work as professional musicians.
The demise of J.P. Sunshine was accelerated by the claustrophobic, chemically enhanced environment the band had created around itself in Duffell's apartment.

Sunshine Pop and Soft Pop are some of the most heartening, rewarding, delightful genres of music out there, and there's so much of it to explore, all of it capturing that special magic something-or-other that makes it legendary in Japan and France and other places where pop music actually matters.

Come to the Sunshine: Soft Pop Nuggets From the WEA Vaults: Fufkin.com: David Fufkin: February, 2004
This is no joke mind you: soft pop of the '60s defined by such true greats as The Association, Harpers Bizarre and some of the lesser known bands of this genre is, to this writer, some of the most beautifully engaging moments of the '60s and early '70s.
However, the band that defined the sunshine pop genre was and is The Association.
The timbre and the combination of the voices have an affect similar to the best choir performances: the band is on and they are so good it didn't and doesn't matter that, in an era of guitar heroes, their front man wielded a mean flute and wore a snazzy argyle sweater.

 [Exotica] re: sunshine pop
While it certainly has a "pop" sense to it in some parts, I feel that it leans far into the mood music end of the spectrum.
Finally, to me the term "pop" has always meant more of a bankable, "popular" song that was (is) targeted towards mass audiences.
For what it's worth, while I love sunshine pop music and other pop genres as a whole, pop music can at times be somewhat brainless...meaning that it isn't very thought-provoking.

They continued to prime the group to become sunshine pop stars, pushing covers on them of songs by Curt Boettcher ("I Just Want To Be Your Friend"), Roger Nichols and Tony Asher ("Just Beyond Your Smile," and a lovely version) and Nichols/Williams ("To Put Up With You").
Its fun stuff, and definitely a welcome addition to the Sunshine Pop genre, but while innovators like Nichols and Boettcher were pioneering new sounds and forging new methods in the studio, the Sunshine Company are definitely trend-followers -- or were roped into being trend-followers.
By the time of their third record ("Sunshine and Shadows") they're a much more interesting and original thing -- the folk-rock begins to take over but loses none of the sunshine, and the layer of trippiness remains as well even as they begin to tread into Stone Ponies territory.

The Millennium were the brainchild of Curt Boettcher, one of the key masterminds of sunshine pop -- the painfully cheesy yet intermittently endearing genre of music characterized by soaring harmonies, sappy strings, hummable memories, and cheery lyrics full of rainbows, love and, well, sunshine.
There's still plenty of sunshine pop -- in all its cloying glory -- and some straightforward pop; but the real standouts are the more ornate, psychedelic tracks, where Boettcher really worked his way around the studio.

"The Best of the Sunshine Company" Liner Notes
The Sunshine Company's very name summons the spirit of the mini-genre of 1960s pop-rock that, long after its heyday, was named sunshine pop.
Like many of the Southern Californian pop harmony groups of the second half of the 1960s -- the Mamas and the Papas being the most famous example -- the Sunshine Company's roots were not in pop, but in folk.
The Sunshine Company's version came out on their first LP, but in the meantime McEuen brought them another song to record vocals onto, "Happy." "We didn't think anything about it, really," says Manseau.

Admittedly, the harmony singing often isn't as immaculate as that of the Beach Boys, the Association or the Mamas of the Papas, and there's a couple of tracks here which are just as much 'positivo pop' as they are fully fledged sunshine pop, but even so, this is an utterly delightful compilation.

I contended that many simply had the fortune to land a record deal, get superb vocal arrangements, and record what was at the time contemporary vocal pop.
And this is sort of why I don't include the Lettermen in "soft sunshine pop" though certainly they're related.

Beyond the commonplace hits are such lesser-heard ditties such as the aforementioned "Don't Say You Don't Remember", Strawberry Alarm Clock's other hit "Tomorrow" and Gary Puckett's "Over You", the plaintive pop gem that is often overlooked in favor of his first three bigger hits.
Rounding out the piece are the Hondells' "Kissin' My Life Away", a failed attempt to outlive their surf/hot rod stigma and "Always You" from the "Sundowners", a studio group that, despite having substantial backing power, never shared in the success of the other bubblegum groups of the era.
