The population of Sunuwars, according to the census of 2001, is 95,254.
The Sunuwar do not marry their maternal uncle's and aunt's daughters; however, the marrying of one's widowed elder sister-in-law after agreement on both sides occurs and is not uncommon among Sunuwars.
Sunuwars have a tradition of typical merrymaking; they dance playing Jhyamta (cymbals), Vinayo (a kind of small musical instrument made of bamboo to be played in mouth), Murchunga (a kind of small musical instrument made of iron to be played in mouth) and other similar musical instruments and wear colourful dresses.

While a high-level delegation from the Nepalese Government has been busy defending Nepal's record on torture before the United Nation's Committee Against Torture during its 35th session, developments concerning a case illustrate the brutal nature of torture and the widespread impunity in the country that the delegation in Geneva have been at pains to deny.
The soldiers were looking for Maina's mother, Devi Sunuwar, who had reportedly witnessed the gang rape and killing of her niece by security personnel earlier the same month (please see previous AHRC urgent appeal at http://www.ahrchk.net/ua/mainfile.php/2004/625/).
Since her arrest and detention, the security forces have made a number of conflicting claims as to the whereabouts and personal integrity of Maina Sunuwar, ranging from denying her detention to her having been killed in an "encounter" with security personnel.

The army’s verdict [on the Maina Sunuwar case] is one of the many incidents of violence and killings disguised as ‘encounters’ by the security forces mobilised against the Maoists.
The board of the Court of Inquiry set up by the Military Court has concluded that the army killed young Maina Sunuwar of Kabhre by subjecting her to severe torture, despite the availability of ‘alternative measures of interrogation’.
According to evidence collected by the Board, the army went to the village acting on information provided by Maoist cadre Bimala BK who was arrested by police in the Palanchok area and told the army in course of interrogation that Debi Sunuwar and her daughter Maina Sunuwar were in contact with the Maoist party.

The Sunuwar, who call themselves Koinch, are one among the more than 50 ethnic groups of Nepal.
They speak a Tibeto-Burman language (Koich lo) and they belong to the autochthonous population of eastern Nepal also known as Kiranti, inhabiting the hilly region at the foot of the Everest massif since centuries before the unification of Nepal in its actual boundaries.

On 17 February 2004 about 15 soldiers of the Royal Nepalese Army came to the house of Devi Sunuwar, Maina's mother, who had witnessed the gang rape and killing of villagers by security personnel during the same month.
She stated that she was asked by the soldiers to show Maina Sunuwar's house, after which they were both taken to the barracks, where they were blindfolded, tied to trees and beaten for hours before being separated.
On 21 April 2004 a national weekly published a letter reportedly signed by some soldiers to the effect that Maina was tortured and killed as a result of electric shocks applied to her breasts.

Devi Sunuwar then went to the Chief District Officer (CDO) at the District Administrative Office who registered the complaint, but stated that it had no legal validity since according to the State Cases Act the complaint has to be registered by the police.
More importantly, protection must be offered to Maina Sunuwar's family and all persons assisting them in lodging the complaint concerning Maina's death, as there is fear that the Nepalese military will retaliate against the family if they continue with their actions.

It said seven people were abducted recently by the Maoist cadres and the status of four of them still unknown.
The first three were abducted from Lalitpur while Sunuwar was abducted from Jorpati, Kathmandu,last Tuesday.
Such acts of the Maoists have violated the international human rights standard and humanitarian laws and seem to have ignored the code of conduct signed by the government and the Maoists, the Commission said.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) today said it “deeply regrets” the comments made by Human Rights Watch (HRW), an international rights group, that the action taken against Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) officials involved in the death of Maina Sunuwar, a Maoist girl from Kavre, in an army barrack, was only a ‘cosmetic gesture’.
The three servicemen including Colonel Babi Khatri, according to the MoD, were placed in solitary confinement in army custody from 14 March 2005 to 9 September 2005 when full investigation before the court martial verdict was underway.
The RNA had on September 27 stated that three army officers had been sentenced for the death of Sunuwar in an army barrack in Kavre’s Paanchal months ago.
