Super 8 mm film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Super 8 mm film, also called Super 8 is a motion picture film format that was developed in the 1960s and released on the market in 1965 by Eastman Kodak as an improvement of the older 8mm home movie format.
The film is 8 mm wide, exactly the same as the older standard 8 mm film and also has perforations on only one side, but the dimensions of the perforations are reduced, allowing the exposed area to be increased in size.
There are no super 8 mm cameras in production; the last type made was the Russian spring-driven (as opposed to most Super 8 mm cameras being battery driven) Quarz cameras, known as the Kinoflex in the USA; it was last produced in the early 1990s.

 Standard 8 vs. Super 8
Super 8mm film is actually 8mm wide to begin with.
You do not have to load Standard 8mm film in darkness, just be sensible and load it in slightly subdued light (i.e under a tree, not out in the sun.) The outer layers of film on the spool protect the inner ones from light whilst the film is being loaded.
That is Super 8mm film, again sealed in a handy cartridge, but this time the spools are on top of each other rather than mounted on the same axle as in Super 8.

KODAK: Super 8mm Film History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Since the 8mm frame was one-quarter the size of "sixteen", this method reduced by a factor of four the amount of film necessary to give the same running time - four minutes - as a standard one-hundred-foot length of 16mm stock.
The success of 8mm film was almost immediate, and within about fifteen years, 16mm film became almost exclusively a format of the professional filmmaker.
16mm and standard 8mm formats had placed the perforation at the corners of the frame to reduce fogging of the image at the head and tail of the roll caused during loading of the film.

The new 8mm film, called Super 8mm, was supplied in 50 ft. 8mm cassettes which were very similar to the Agfa and Meopta Regular 8mm cassettes introduced years before.
For semi-professional use, Double Super 8mm was supplied in the same configuration as Regular 8mm on 16mm 100 ft. reels.
Double Super 8mm gave far better results because the film passed through the precision film gate of the camera instead of that of a mass produced plastic magazine.

History Super 8 & Double 8mm Film   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Super 8 has always been identified by it's simple to use 50ft cartridge, but it was also available from 1975 to recently in a special 200ft cartridge for longer filming times to be used in certain specially made Super 8 cameras accepting this larger cartridge.
Also, another similar format known as Double Super 8mm uses a principle similar to that of Double Regular 8mm, that is, film that is 16mm wide but with the Super 8 perforations and run thru the camera exposing each half, then to be slit and joined after processing.
Super 8mm film is currently available from KODAK in: Kodachrome 40 Type-A ASA 40(25 daylight)silent, Ektachrome VNF 7240 ASA 125(80 Daylight)silent, Tri-X B&W Reversal 7278 silent (ASA 200), and Plus-X B&W Reversal 7276 silent (ASA 50).

8mm and Super 8 Conversion To Digital
Geometric interpretation – To find the exact frame a line is calculated from the center of the sprocket hole to the far edge which is perpendicular to the far edge.
This line is the x-axis of the frame and should go through the center of the frame itself (for super8 format, For 8mm it will define the boarder between frames).
The software currently scales the image so that the sprocket hole center and the far edge of the film are always in the same place and orientation (a “nearest neighbor” interpolation is utilized currently – since the scale should be close to 1) with respect to the final frame.
