Super C class ferry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Super C Class Ferries are ferries that are being built for BC Ferries at the Flensburger Schiffbau–Gesellschaft shipyard in Flensburg, Germany.
BC Ferries intended to request the Federal Government waive the 25% import duties (there is no free trade agreement between Germany and Canada), but BC Ferries must show that West Coast shipyards are no longer capable of constructing a vessel the size of the ‘Super C-class’ ferry.
The cost certainty guarantee was a significant consideration for BC Ferries (especially since the recent steel price increases) after being liable for cost overruns on the Pacificat fast ferries, which were partially responsible for toppling the NDP govrenment in the 2001 provincial election.

C class ferry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The C-Class ferries are a class of double-ended ferries operated by BC Ferries in the Strait of Georgia in British Columbia, and were all constructed during the 1970s and early 1980s.
These are double ended ferries that have a separate bridge at each end of the ferry and therefore they are not required to turn around during the sailing.
At one time these ferries operated on the Swartz Bay-Tsawwassen route, but limitations placed on their speed when transiting Active Pass (after an accident they were required to operate in the more maneuverable docking mode rather than cruising mode) make it unfeasible to run them on that route anymore.

BC Ferries' first route, commissioned in 1960, was between Swartz Bay, a small suburb of Sidney, and Tsawwassen, a part of the Corporation of Delta, using just two vessels.
A national controversy erupted in July, 2004 when BC Ferries announced that the company had disqualified all Canadian bids and only the proposals from European shipyards to build three new Super-C class ships were being considered.
The argument for domestic construction of the ferries is that it would employ numerous British Columbia workers, would revitalize the sagging B.C. shipbuilding industry, and entitle the provincial government to a large portion of the cost in the form of taxes.

But Hahn, an American who was appointed ferries boss in May 2003, invoked images of the failed fast ferry project that cost British Columbians almost $500 million when he said the ferry service needs new ships that can be built on time and on budget.
The three fast ferries were eventually auctioned off for less than $20 million, a fraction of their cost.

B.C. Ferries asked for a 2.5 per cent boost last fall, when fuel costs were at their historic high.
Ferry commissioner Martin Crilly gave the corporation approval for an increase that is much smaller that what it sought, and included an order that the corporation needs to start reducing the amount of fuel it burns by one per cent in 2006 and another one per cent in 2007.
As B.C. Ferries continues to deal with these higher fuel costs, it won't make sense for these costs to be dealt with in a piecemeal basis.
