Dassault Super Étendard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Super Étendard had been developed in parallel with a new air-launched version of Aérospatiale's anti-shipping missile, the AM 39 Exocet, and these were supplied to Argentina as well.
Five Super Étendards were loaned to Iraq in 1983 while the country waited on deliveries of the Dassault Mirage F1s that had been ordered.
All Super Étendards are expected to be retired from French service by 2010, to be replaced from 2006 onwards with a navalised version of the Dassault Rafale.

 SUPER ETENDARD
The Super Etendard is a carrier-based single-seat strike fighter first introduced into service in 1978.
This led to the design of the Mystère XXII (Etendard II), Mystère XXIV (Etendard IV) and Mystère XXVI (Etendard VI), developments which were remarkable for improving lift so that take-off and landing became possible at reduced speeds.
The naval single-seater combat aircraft, Dassault Super-Etendard, is a modernized version of the Etendard IV M. Main modifications include updating of the weapons system through the installation (a first for a French production aircraft) of a modern navigation and combat management system.

The Etendard was originally envisioned as a NATO strike fighter, but was ultimately accepted only as a carrier-based fighter for the French Navy in 1956.
Though nearly replaced by a variant of the Jaguar, the French later authorized Dassault to build an improved Super Etendard with a new navigation/attack system, a better engine, and improved aerodynamics.
Though the Super Etendard ended up having far worse performance than the Jaguar, it was accepted by the French Navy and continued to serve until the early 2000s when replaced by the Rafale M.

As the name suggests the Super Etendard is based on an old aircraft of the 1950's which was remodelled over 2 decades.
Standard weaponry includes 2x30mm Cannon and for anti ship strike the famous Exocet missile which made it so potent during the Falklands war, other typical loads include four LR 150 rocket launchers, or four 400lb conventional bombs, one option in French service was a 150 kiloton stand off nuclear weapon.
The first Super Etentards were delivered to the French navy in 1978.During the 1982 Falklands War the Super Etendard became world famous as the most destructive of the Argentine airforces combat aircraft destroying a British warship (HMS Sheffield) and a British merchant ship(Atlantic Conveyor) which was part of the task force.

First flown in 1974, the Super Etendard was designed as a replacement for the French Navy's aging Etendard fleet to fly from land bases and the "Clemenceau" class Fleet Carriers.
In 1982, when the battle for the Falklands/Malvinas took place, the Argentine Navy possessed five Super Etendards, one of which was probably out of action for part or all of the conflict and was used for spares.
Despite only having four aircraft and a very limited number of AM.39 Exocet Air-to-Surface missiles (the Super Etendard's most effective weapon), the very real threat they posed was the cause of major headaches for the British fleet commanders throughout the conflict.
