Super Furry Animals - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Super Furry Animals (also known as "SFA", the "Furries" and the "Super Furries") are a Welsh rock band, with leanings towards psychedelic rock and electronic experimentation.
SFA released their first record on Ankst in 1994, the "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllynyngofod (In Space)" EP, to general critical acclaim.
SFA finished their UK tour at the Cardiff International Arena in Cardiff, where they showcased the first ever concert in surround sound and broadcast it on the World Wide Web - something which was going to feature a lot more in the future.

Super Furry Animals are in Istanbul to perform at One Love, a rock festival held in a park north of the city, but their singer seldom misses an opportunity to search out some rare grooves.
SFA are happy to play big venues - "Stadiums are only shit when the band is shit," reasons Bunf - but they have never allowed their music to be used in commercials.
SFA's determination to record some of their music in Welsh can also be seen as a political act, although the band try not to over-analyse it.

Super Furry Animals were one of the first post-alternative bands, fusing together a number of disparate musical genres -- including power pop, punk rock, techno, and progressive rock -- creating a shimmering, melodic, irreverent, and willfully artsy rock & roll.
Super Furry Animals also became infamous during the summer of 1996 for attending all of the pop music festivals in a gigantic tank.
Super Furry Animals entered the studios in January of 1997 to record their second album, Radiator, which was released in August of 1997.

The difference between Super Furry Animals and all those freaky folk guys is that SFA aren't really trying to be all that freaky anymore.
While there's no doubt that listening to the Super Furries' seventh album is mostly a pleasure, there are moments when it feels like a little less relaxation might have paid off.

village voice > music > Super Furry Animals' Rings Around the World by Scott Seward
Maybe SFA haven't donated a billion dollars to the UN like Bono has (or was that Tina Turner?) or pushed legislation that would ban the electric spanking of war babies, but still.
Not only would I take SFA's premise that people are barmy, naff, and loony over U2's thesis that people are lost and need saving any day of the week, but SFA's latest, Rings Around the World, runs rings around any yahoomanist hoo-hah that U2 could poop out of their blarney-filled butts.
And PE, like SFA, had an immediacy and sense of purpose that gave their best work an electric glow that grew brighter with every step they took toward a future-world that always seemed just beyond their grasp.

Super Furry Animals: Phantom Power: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-05)
To some, comfortable may counted as a weakness-- for those who wear their bands like fashion, balling up inside Super Furry Animals' farmer-spun wool sweater won't compare to the Issey Miyake-esque bands peacocking down the runway in a loose web of spangles, layers of veneer, and sprigs of feathers.
This dichotomy is what makes the album so fascinating-- Super Furry Animals rail against the "gulf of misery" created by America (snowballing seas "painted red by bleeding army"), yet more than ever invest their efforts in honey-dipped California harmonies, Mississippi mud slide-guitars, and snapping Stax drumming.
Super Furry Animals never settle into one mood here, and Phantom Power sees the down-to-earth Welsh band moving away from genre-hopping and rough juxtapositions, and beginning to blend their influences into an evenly spread melange that simply sounds like a highly evolved pop band.

This would have meant the demise of most bands (after all, non-Welsh fans couldn't exactly sing along), but the Super Furry Animal's soulful, raucous music and wild antics were unstoppably appealing and the band quickly became a cult favorite in Wales.
With the lyrics now in English, Super Furry Animals drew critical acclaim, but the album only charted at #23 in Britain.
Live, the Super Furry Animals' costumed band members sometimes seem a little daft, singing about hamsters and TV weathergirls and acting like maniacs, but they will no doubt always be hometown heroes in Cymru (that's Wales to you non-natives).

Guerilla may be the Furries’ electronic masterpiece and Phantom Power may showcase their serious side, but only on Love Kraft could a country tune about an unwanted pregnancy and suicide (“Ohio Heat”) precede a Gershwin-styled love song (“Walk You Home”).

Perhaps the upcoming studio album would disappoint, and the Furries, paranoid and self-conscious, were buttering us up with oodles of "minor" works.
For this, their seventh studio record, the Furries retreat deeper into the silk-lined sanctum of orchestral rock.
The record's MVP is (perhaps tellingly, given the sometimes lackluster effort) an honorary Furry: the High Llamas' Sean O'Hagan, who contributes bulbous, Serge Gainsbourg-approved orchestral arrangements to a majority of the songs.

In part, these animals have become less popular in stores because pet stores have received considerable bad press for their inappropriate care of puppies and kittens, which need socialization and are vulnerable to illnesses, and for their purchasing the animals from puppy mills.
As a result, it is usually easier and cheaper to acquire puppies and kittens from animal shelters, private breeders, or rescue groups than from pet stores.
Because the care of these types of animals is difficult and expensive, usually only stores that specialize in exotic animals carry them as regular stock.

For those of you just joining us: Super Furry Animals were the most life-affirming British pop group of the late 1990s, retaining their yen for sunny melodies even as Radiohead perfected gloomy computer-age ennui and Blur's buoyant choruses sank into heartbreakingly dissonant sad bastard music.
Since landing on this watery, sun-scorched planet, SFA have gleefully mish-mashed influences that include the Beach Boys, the Beatles, David Bowie, and Chemical Brothers.
Yeah, Super Furry Animals sure were a great band.

Super Furry Animals: Phantom Power - PopMatters Music Review
"The Piccolo Snare" is yet another Super Furry homage to Brian Wilson, with its lush vocal harmonies, but true to their nature, they turn the song on its ear two thirds of the way through with a terrific, lightly funky coda that fits perfectly (yes, that's right, the Super Furry Animals are actually showing restraint!).
Similar to what Grandaddy has done on their excellent recent album Sumday, Super Furry Animals have softened the more distracting elements of their sound, and like Grandaddy's album, it's a success.
There's still the odd hint of goofy experimentation (the rhythmic car horn honking in "Valet Parking", the sound of the band fooling around with Uzis and Kalashnikovs on "The Undefeated"), but the focus, this time, is on the songs themselves.

The gorgeous "Presidential Suite"--which, incidentally, features John Cale tickling the ivories--marries the classic SFA psychedelic shimmer to a weary lyric concerning the Monica Lewinsky scandal that rocked the Clinton presidency, frontman Gruff Rhys questioning it sadly like it's the most passé thing he can comprehend.
