Mario - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mario is depicted as a somewhat short, pudgy, Italian plumber who lives in the Mushroom Kingdom, where he is regarded as a hero; he is best known for constantly thwarting the plans of the evil King Bowser to kidnap Princess Peach and subjugate the Mushroom Kingdom.
Mario's name in Donkey Kong, "Jumpman", was changed to "Mario" in the arcade game Mario Bros. His namesake was Mario Segali, the landlord of Nintendo of America, who barged in on a meeting in the company's Redmond, WA facility to demand an overdue rent payment.
Mario considers himself the biggest fan of former WWE wrestler Captain Lou Albano (another inside joke since Albano himself was the one who portrayed Mario in the live action segments and provided his voice in the cartoon).

But the fact is that Miyamoto and Mario were the first to do it right, and in the process they provided the world with the gold standard by which all subsequent games have and forever will be judged.
In the end, though, Mario turned out to be the real winner -- Nintendo is a shadow of its former self and the NES has been outclassed by three generations of hardware, but Mario is still the most beloved mascot in gaming.
