Super Mario 64 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Super Mario 64 was the first 3D game in the Mario series, and though it was not the first-ever 3D platformer, it revolutionized and defined the genre, much as Super Mario Bros. defined the 2D sidescrolling platformer.
Super Mario 64 is often counted as the first among games such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Metroid Prime, Sonic Adventure, and Final Fantasy VII to have brought a series of 2D games into full 3D while maintaining their signature feel.
Super Mario 64 DS for the Nintendo DS is a remake of Super Mario 64 that features Yoshi, Luigi, and Wario as additional playable characters, additional stars and courses, touch screen mini-games, and a couple minor multiplayer modes.

Mario 64 would be a better model to base Mario 128 on.

Mario Sunshine, the island theme dominated the look and feel, and of course the waterpack dominated the play mechanic...which was a good play mechanic, but again, less Mario-y than Mario 64.
From: Rochester, NY The point, I believe, was not that it was the same exact model used in SM64, but that each of the 128 Marios had the same number of polygons as the SM64 Mario, yet moved fluidly and independant of each other without slowdown.

UGO's Future of Gaming - Super Mario 128   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda and just about any other Nintendo franchise that means anything, has been talking about Super Mario 128 ever since a 2000 Spaceworld demo that showed off the GameCube's processing power by letting loose 128 3D Marios to run around the screen.
But after Super Mario Sunshine wasn't quite the smash that its predecessor, Super Mario 64, was, suddenly the rumors started to fly.
Recent Mario titles have focused on other genres entirely, from sports to RPG games, so maybe Mario's console platforming days just peaked with Super Mario 64, one of the greatest games of all time, and from thereon out, Nintendo would have to play catchup.

With the general consensus that Mario’s last outing in Super Mario Sunshine was hardly the most prolific in his long career, the pressure is on Miyamoto and his team to deliver the goods and release a title to put the moustachioed one well and truly back on the map.
Super Mario 128 however has more then just the future of its plump, talismanic hero resting on its shoulders, with older gamers and the Nintendo hardcore alike demanding a game that revolutionises the stale platforming genre and brings back some of the popularity that it enjoyed during the 80’s and early 90’s.
The screens look decidedly similar to Super Mario Sunshine in style, and there does appear to be a map of sorts in one of them along with an intriguing icon in the bottom right corner.

When you get to the top of a level, like the mountain in Super Mario 64, you should be saying to yourself, "Holy crap, I jumped all the way from down there, that little object in the distance, to this height." There needs to be a lot of elevation, a lot of platforming and jumping.
