Bryan Gale's Blog, University of Warwick
The King Of All Cosmos went on a bender and accidentally destroyed all the stars in the sky.
To fix this he sent to Earth his five centimetre tall son, The Prince, to roll katamaris to replace the stars – a katamari being a strange sphere that picks up anything smaller than itself, which then adds to the size of the katamari snowball-style, allowing ever larger objects to be collected.
It is thus clear, that though much of the raw material for New Super Mario Bros. is over two decades old, Nintendo have not let their mastery of the platform genre, developed in the intervening years, go to waste.

Super Mario Bros 3 was released fairly late in the Nintendo Entertainment System's lifespan, so it was definitely the prettiest of the bunch.
The Super Nintendo's sound quality was FAR superior to that of anything else out at the time, and was practically CD-quality sound, so it was definitley pleasing to the ears.

 Super Mario All-Stars Review
The addition of Super Mario Brothers: The Lost Levels is a welcome treat to American audiences, as they've likely never seen this challenging Japanese release in the style of the original Super Mario Brothers.
When this game came out, Super Mario World had already been released and the purpose of All-Stars was, presumably, to allow fans of these previous games to experience them on the (then) new SNES system and to provide a somewhat more consistent Super Mario Brothers experience.
At any rate, Super Mario All-Stars is STILL a great game, even if only for its aesthetic enhancements to these already-entertaining games, the addition of those challenging "lost levels" and the fact that you won't have to haul out your old NES system to play them.

Mario All Stars was released in 1994 on cable television, first airing on The Family Channel (now ABC Family), then later in edited reruns on the USA Network.
Oddly enough, the commercials aired for this show featured clips from The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, which was suspiciously never featured on this show, and claimed to feature the Mario Bros. in "40 brand-new adventures".
Mario All-Stars was almost undoubtedly named after Super Mario All-Stars, another compilation of past Mario-related works (although games rather than television episodes, in Super Mario All-Stars's case).
