Paka's genesis occurred in the central Pacific Ocean during late November 1997, which is near the end of the official central Pacific hurricane season (NOAA 1998a).
The watch was upgraded to a typhoon warning for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan at 1530 UTC 15 December [at the same time that Paka was upgraded to a super typhoon with sustained winds of 72 m s-1 (140 kt)].
The Super Typhoon Paka (1997) post storm data acquisition could not have been completed by the NPDAT without the assistance of the local officials, some of whom were only beginning to recover from the typhoon's effects on their own personal property and lives.
