  Super audio compact disc
Super audio CD (SACD) is a derivative of the compact disc, with a larger storage capacity that is used to record music at a higher bit-rate.
Although the same physical size as the compact disc SACD uses a different kind of digital audio signal, Direct Strem Digital (DSD).
SACD can include a include a CD layer so that the disc can be played back on a traditional CD player, but with out the benefits of DSD.

COMPACT DISC [compact disc] (CD), a small plastic disc used for the storage of digital data.
As originally developed for audio systems, the sound signal is sampled at a rate of 44,100 times a second, then each sample is measured and digitally encoded on the 4 3/4 in (12 cm) disc as a series of microscopic pits on an otherwise polished surface.

Super Audio CD - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Super Audio CD (SACD) is a read-only optical audio disc aimed at providing much higher fidelity digital audio reproduction than the compact disc.
SACD uses a very different technology from CD and DVD-Audio to encode its audio data, a 1-bit delta-sigma modulation process known as Direct Stream Digital at the very high sampling rate of 2.8224 MegaHertz — with the typical sampling rate present on audio CDs currently being 44.1kHz.
SACDs must always contain a 2-channel stereo mix and may optionally contain a surround mix (usually the 5.1 layout) as well.

While the Compact Disc was an important accomplishment in music reproduction, discerning listeners soon demanded even more — that's why Sony and Philips, the inventors of CD, have created the new Super Audio Compact Disc (SACD).
SACDs have enough room for both a two-channel mix and a multi-channel version of the same music, not to mention text and graphics.
Used by Sony to develop everything from Compact Disc and DAT to professional DASH recorders and digital mixing consoles, PCM technology offered astounding clarity over previous processes — until now… A fundamental breakthrough in audio technology, Direct Stream Digital® encoding represents the evolution of digital audio — unsurpassed in reproductive authenticity.

 DVD-A vs SACD
In case you haven’t noticed, the high-quality audio disc marketplace is in the middle of a format war, reminiscent of the days of VHS vs. Betamax.
DSD is the technology used in the Super Audio CD (SACD) system released by Sony, Philips and their affiliates in competition with DVD-A. SACD proponents say that it sounds significantly superior to PCM and DVD-A, with a smoother high-frequency performance and added detail and clarity.
However, the truth is that being able to play an SACD on a regular CD player is only a benefit if the new disc sells at the same price as a compact disc – which is not the case, thereby locking out the majority of today’s price-sensitive record buyers.

Philips Super Audio CD/DVD-Video Player SACD1000 reviewed on AudioRevolution.com
SACD is a development by Sony and Philips as a successor to the Compact Disc (and competitor to DVD-Audio), but the two companies have taken a very different attitude to delivering high-quality audio.
Another big difference between SACD and DVD-A is that the former are – at present, at least – decidedly audio discs, not audio-visual discs.
SACD’s frequency response extends beyond 50 kHz (according to the write-up in the SACD1000 manual, which might be considered by some to be a bit conservative: there has been talk of SACD going up to 100 kHz in some cases, and in theory there is no reason why not).

Because of the fact that SACD uses DSD and not PCM, the frequency band is not half of the 2.8224 MHz.
In order to use the full benefit of the SACD with its Direct Stream Digital high resolution, and to have the possibility of editing the recording, it is of course necessary to make recordings with a high resolution medium like the analog tape recorder or any high resolution PCM format.

DVD-Audio vs. Super Audio Compact Disc
The CD differed substantially from its predecessor in that it was the first digital audio format available to consumers, using a system known as Pulse Code Modulation or PCM to encode the audio signals.
This compression is based on an algorithm that predicts which components of the audio signal you will be unable to hear because they’ll be psychoacoustically masked (a fancy term meaning “drowned out”) by other components in the same signal.
This was introduced as a two-channel stereo format in the fall of 1999 and as a six-channel format (which, again, can serve as a 5.1 system) in the spring of 2001.
