  SuperDisk drive
SuperDisk's main claim to fame was that in addition to being able to read and write its native 120MB (later 240MB) disks, the drives could read and write the 1.44MB floppy format (MFM) that was still popular at the time.
SuperDisk drives have been sold in parallel port, USB and ATAPI variants.
SuperDisk should not be confused with SuperDrive, which is a trademark used by Apple Computer for various disk drive products.

Imation USB SuperDisk review - IT Reviews
SuperDisk is the high-capacity floppy disk standard which is rapidly gaining popularity in both PC and Apple Mac markets.
Imation's first attempt at an external SuperDisk drive was a solid but rather uninspiring device which attached to the parallel port of the host computer.
The drive mechanism itself is an IDE interface device and Imation's design solution for incorporating an IDE to USB converter is to house it in an oversize connector plug built onto one end of the USB cable.

Imation currently is one of the largest manufacturers of branded data cartridges for Travan tape drives and is a leader for color proofing in the imaging world, helping colors on-screen be as close as possible to the real thing.
SuperDisk removable diskettes, supported by a number of drive companies, can store as much as 120MB of data on a diskette the same size as a 3.5-inch diskette.
However, the popularity of the Zip drives eventually won out and Imation has discontinued manufacturing the SuperDisk drives, although it still provides diskettes and technical support for its drives.

Imation - SuperDisk Support & FAQs
The driver for the 1x Internal IDE SuperDisk Drives is no longer supported by Microsoft; therefore the 1x SuperDisk Drive is not compatible with Microsoft Windows 2000 or XP.
Drive incompatibility is the most common reason for SuperDisk failure.
Standard disk drives are unable to use the SuperDisk technology, as it requires a laser beam for proper tracking.

Review: VST SuperDisk Drive for PowerBook G3s   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The VST SuperDisk drive provides all the functionality of a standard SuperDisk drive capable of reading and writing both regular floppies and 120 MB SuperDisks while coming in an ultra-light (110 ounces) and compact form factor that clicks reassuringly into either the left or right expansion bay.
The promise of SuperDisk drives is that they are functionally two drives in one, which is true, but the performance hit is enough to make one question the usability.
Granted, SuperDisk drives are convenient for those needing to lug their PowerBooks around the country and have both floppy and higher-capacity media, but they are too slow for serious gameplay, too slow for multimedia presentations, and too slow for any type of QuickTime playback.

 RetroMac - SuperDisk
After removing the SuperDisk drive from its external USB case, I verified it could be installed where Apple's SuperDrive once resided.
Then, I held the SuperDisk in place in the bracket, and added a piece of sheet plastic between the top of the SuperDisk and the underside of the CD-RW drive shelf.
The floppy drive bracket is slightly wider than the SuperDisk, so I used cyanoacrylate adhesive to make suitably thick spacers from washers.

eBay Guides - SuperDisks - What are they
SuperDisks and SuperDisk drives (sometimes referred to as LS-120 disks and drives) look nearly identical to a standard floppy disk and drive, and for good reason.
SuperDisk drives are backwards compatible; not only can they read and write the super high-density 120MB SuperDisks, but they can also read and write the old 1.44MB floppy disks as well.
SuperDisk drives use optical technology (Laser guided.) This is how the drive keeps track of the head's location on the surface of the disk, and allows it to properly read and write such a large amount of data in such a small space.

SuperDisk diskettes are etched with a servo pattern at the factory.
This pattern is then read by the SuperDisk drive to precisely align the read/write head.
The result is that a SuperDisk diskette can have 2,490 tracks, as opposed to the 160 tracks that conventional 3.5-inch 1.44 MB diskettes use.

Imation quickly came to the rescue with their SuperDisk drive for the iMac, which is finally shipping in decent quantities.
Transferring files to the SuperDisk is about 10% slower than transferring them from the SuperDisk, but the SuperDisk really slows down if you are using other primary USB devices (such as a printer) while you are copying.
The SuperDisk is an ideal drive for iMac owners, solving both the floppy issue and adding a higher capacity method of transfering files, all in one drive.

Emedia Professional: The Hi-Val SuperDisk ATAPI IDE floppy drive model FD-3120A - Evaluation
Although not an MO drive in the conventional sense, the Hi-Val drive does qualify as a magnetic/optic device, combining magnetic technology for reading and writing with optical technology for positioning the "dual-gap" head that allow backward compatibility.
The drive is configured as a slave by default; in testing, the Hi-Val unit was installed as a slave on the secondary bus of a 166mHz PC running Windows 95 version 4.00.950.
The drive uses a combination of magnetic and optical technology, and a "dual-gap" head to read and write to LS-120 disks as well as their lower-capacity antecedents.

Panasonic LS-240 Superdisk drive review - IT Reviews   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The original LS-120 Superdisk drive (reviewed here), which could read, write and format 120MB disks using its optical tracking technology, was a minor success, overshadowed in its heyday by Iomega's Zip.
The Superdisk's main strength was its compatibility with standard 1.44MB floppies and this is carried forward to Panasonic's replacement device, the LS-240 Superdisk.
The extra capacity of the 240MB Superdisk is welcome, with graphics and particularly photo files increasing in size all the time.

The SuperDisk Drive is about the same size as a SyQuest SyJet or an Iomega Zip drive (roughly 5" x 7" by 2") but seems a bit heavier and like them, the SuperDisk Drive needs an external power supply.
The SuperDisk's is nice because it is small, light (no brick) and plugs into a powerstrip without hogging the two adjacent (or more) outlets as many power supplies do.
In the second four entries, as expected, it is clear that the SuperDisk Drive with a 120 MB SuperDisk is much slower than the SCSI hard drives used with the 9600.
