  SuperGrafx Extreme - Introduction
The SuperGrafx is the closest thing the video game industry has ever produced to an assassin.
What makes the SuperGrafx so unique and sought after is that with the right add-ons, it is the only console capable of playing every PC Engine game.
This page is dedicated to the glory that was and the glory that nearly was in the history of the SuperGrafx.

The Supergrafx was released as the successor to the then very popular PC Engine.
Supergrafx is most notable as being the pinnacle of PC Engine hardware.

Compared to the latter, it has four times the amount of work RAM for the main CPU, a second video chip with its own video RAM, and a priority controller chip that allowed the output of both video chips to be combined in various ways.
The SuperGrafx was largely a failure due to a lack of software written to support its enhanced abilities; only 6 titles were ever released.
The expanded work RAM is available even when the SuperGrafx has been switched into PC-Engine compatibility mode, a quirk that doesn't seem to cause any issues with original PC-Engine software.

However the final machine was named SuperGrafx, was released earlier than expected, in late 1989, only provided modestly enhanced graphics over the original PC-Engine, had audio that was the same as the PC-Engine and no 16-bit CPU, just the same one as the PC-Engine.
The enhancements SuperGrafx did have: Compared to the PC-Engine, SuperGrafx has four times the amount of work RAM for the main CPU, a second video chip with its own video RAM, and a priority controller chip that allowed the output of both video chips to be combined in various ways.
SuperGrafx had support for 2 independantly scrolling background layers, like the Sega Megadrive/Genesis, instead of the PC-Engine's single layer.

This system is very nearly the same as the original PCE, except it has a duplicate set of video chips (and an extra chip to coordinate the two) and four times as much RAM.
Only five SuperGrafx games (and one hybrid game - Darius) were released, and the system fell into obscurity.

NEC sold an extension cable called the RAU-30 that clips on to the back of the SuperGrafx, and has a PC-Engine shaped box on the other end of the cable that fits into the IFU-30 to allow the two to work.
For the SuperGrafx this is connected to the VPC for further processing.

THE LIGHT SWORD CYPHER MAINFRAME | Dossier | Strider on the NEC SuperGrafX
At the time, the most powerful home console on the market was the NEC SuperGrafX, a Japanese system boasting graphics capabilities that could even beat out dedicated arcade machines, which was no mean feat back in 1989.
It was the only system that even stood a chance of living up to these expectations, but even so, it would take some fairly hefty programming to pull it off.
Instead of using a Strider "mold" (looking at previous code and formatting it for the system), the programmers started from scratch, which was a long and costly endevour.

Both the Duo and SuperGrafx come with their original controllers, original AC and AV adapters, and all proper port covers.

As for why the machine appears dead, the only suggestion I have is that the switch is in the wrong position for the games you are using, if not it could well be dead.
On another note I keep reading everywhere that a Megadrive 1 PSU should work with the Supergrafx but mine wont even fit in the socket, the round connector is too small.

AtariAge Forums -> The super grafix
I'd say the bigger shame here is that the SuperGrafx didn't get more games ported to it in the first place.
I don't mind spending $X00 on a system if there's actually a good selection of good games for it (hence my NeoGeo), but I'd be hard pressed to pay upwards of $200 for a system with only a handful of games (and all japanese releases at that).
And most of the PCEngine fans think it's a shame the SuperGrafx didn't have the extra processing power to make good use of it's added graphics hardware(which is why it didn't get much software support back in the day, as I understand it).

AtariAge Forums -> Strider for NEC SuperGrafx
I'll never forget those 2 screenshots of the supposed Strider SuperGrafx port that were rumored to be in development.
Others suggest that the early source material was later released as the crap conversion of Strider that came out for the PC Engine CD ROM drive later on in the system's life.
Closely comparing the various elements of the arcade and X68000 versions to the supposed SuperGrafx pic does appear that SG pic is indeed just a poorly processed screenshot of the coin-op/X68000, however, I'm still kind of unconvinced in some ways.

Rumor out of Capcom had it that Strider's inclusion in Ken's background was a tribute to a former Capcom employee who had been involved in working on a conversion of Strider for NEC's ill-fated SuperGrafx console.
The story has it that NEC placed heavy pressure on the Strider team to cram more detail into the SuperGrafx conversion than had been fit on the 8-megabit Sega Genesis cartridge, and that the Capcom employee cracked under the stress and wound up in a mental hospital.
Strider was cancelled for the SuperGrafx and an unimpressive port was released years later for the PC Engine.
