SuperWaba - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
SuperWaba is an exceptionally portable Java-like virtual machine (VM) and associated libraries and small tools, that implements a subset of Java -- that means they don't have the will (or the bill) to follow Java specifications too closely.
Since release 5.0, SuperWaba is based on the SDL library, which increases its portability to many other platforms.
SuperWaba split off the Ewe project which catered for Windows CE devices, but was fortunately persuaded to merge again to provide the basis for the current cross-platform code base.

Superwaba was created in beginning of 2000 by Guilherme Campos Hazan (Guich) and derived from another open-source project called Waba (from WabaSoft).
Because of the way SuperWaba was designed, developers can use common Java IDE tools to develop SuperWaba programs.
However, SuperWaba does not implement any portion of Java specification and has no connection to Sun Microsystems, the owner of the Java brand and related trademarks.

Using SuperWaba 3.x on Mac OS X to develop for PalmOS
Installing the Waba SDK or the SuperWaba SDK allows you to develop software for the PalmOS using a subset of the Java language.
The location of the files in 'superwaba' needs to be added to your environment variable CLASSPATH so that the Java VRM knows where to find these files.
Both of these files, along with the SuperWaba virtual machine files, must be installed on a Palm unit or POSE in order to run the application.

The SuperWaba Virtual Machine is in a league of it's own, it is amongst one of the most powerful Java Virtual Machines for mobile devices.

SuperWaba is an Open-Source Project (LGPL) with thousands of members from all over the world.

[SDL] Re: Searching for the SDL author (SDL license)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
SuperWaba currently is LGPL, and the next version, which will include the SDL VM, will have two licenses: LGPL and GPL.
As i understand the LGPL license (which is also used for SuperWaba), it allows you to change the software that uses it to another license.
For example, a game that is created using the SuperWaba class library and that requires the SuperWaba VM to run can change its license, but can't change SuperWaba's one.

Java Pro - A Catalog Model   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
SuperWaba runs a strict subset of Java bytecodes; therefore, SuperWaba applications can be compiled using a standard Java compiler.
(However, SuperWaba adheres to no Java specification, so you really can't call SuperWaba a Java system, though I may accidentally slip into that.) In addition, SuperWaba includes its own set of class libraries, with capabilities that are well tuned for applications on handheld devices.
Our focus, however, is not on the language and VM characteristics, but in those classes that support persistent storage on the device.

Porting the Sokoban SuperWaba application to WabaJump was made easier by the fact that I didn't know how hard it was supposed to be.
But this failed for me, due to the fact that this is a SuperWaba app, and apparently the WabaJump waba.ui.Button doesn't have a getPreferredWidth() method.
I needed to keep Window.class and MainWindow.class from WabaJump, the rest of the waba/ui/ classes from SuperWaba, and I was almost done.

SimpleIsBetter @ 11/2/2005 3:41:22 PM SuperWaba is an outstanding development platform (I'm just a satisfied user, that's all).
SuperWaba shines where the weak Websphere JRE has totally disappointed: rich GUI API, access to PIM databases, powerful SQL database engine, cross-platform desktop synchronization, support for native interfaces, great cross-platform support on Palm, Windows Mobile, Symbian and Linux, and totally open source to boot.
edevoe @ 11/3/2005 8:45:37 AM I agree that SuperWaba is indeed promising, but I have been disappointed by the lack of applications for it.

This is an important part of the LGPL, that allows a learned user to port software to another platform, even if the company doesn't want to spend the resources to do so.

So, I'm addicted to Superwaba, because the Java/object concepts are very interesting; it's a langauge that you can use in every system (even in a chip card), and the results on a Palm are very, very interesting.

I know it's not native, and the overhead you obtain with the runtime....and I'm sure it's not quite fast as C or CASL (I think).
