Solar Neutrino Physics and the SuperKamiokande Detector   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
SuperKamiokande will be a 50,000 tonne water-\vCerenkov detector (in the Mozumi mine in Kamioka, Japan) designed to further the study of neutrino physics and nucleon decay.
The energy resolution and trigger efficiency of SuperKamiokande combined with the sheer size result in a detector that would observe approximately 20,000 solar neutrino events per year above a threshold of 5 MeV (assuming the standard solar model).
SuperKamiokande has two approaches to study if the MSW mechanism can explain the solar neutrino problem and the relevant set of parameters.

The SuperKamiokande collaboration looked for neutrinos that were produced when cosmic rays bombarded oxygen or nitrogen nuclei in the atmosphere.
SuperKamiokande was also used to monitor solar neutrinos.
By combining the data from SuperKamiokande and its own experiment, the SNO collaboration determined how many muon neutrinos or tau neutrinos were incident at the Japanese detector.

 Frontiers - Update
This summer, a collaboration of American and Japanese scientists announced they have obtained evidence for massive neutrinos from the SuperKamiokande experiment in central Japan.
SuperKamiokande consists of a 50,000-tonne tank of highly purified water surrounded by particle detectors 1 kilometre beneath the Earth's surface.
From an analysis of data taken since 1996, the experiment has found strong evidence, in a number of independent measurements, that these neutrinos are 'oscillating'.

Meritorious Applications: Physics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
For example, 90 to 99 percent of the universe is now known to consist of dark matter, which is believed by many physicists to be composed primarily of galactic halos of massive neutrinos.
The results from Superkamiokande will provide the principal basis for the next generation of long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments including the MINOS project at Fermilab.
Increasing the intracontinental bandwidth for data transfer would allow much closer cooperation between scientific groups located on opposite sides of the U.S. Significant cost savings could be achieved through the more efficient usage of the available CPU and data storage devices, which are often scattered throughout the country among several U.S. groups within a collaboration.

Apparently, it is the SuperKamiokande that is the most sensitive to the runaway processes.
Nevertheless, it is indicated that intermediate and high-energy neutrinos may produce a slight correlation with the solar activity in the SuperKamiokande data since they correlate more closely with the runaway neutrino fluxes than with the neutrinos of the SSM-like solar core.
This means that actually even the SuperKamiokande data may contain some, yet not noticed correlation tendency with the solar cycle.

The presence of a non-electron neutrino term in the SuperKamiokande is interpreted until now as indication to neutrino oscillations.
Moreover, the explosive reactions have to produce high-energy axions to which also only the SuperKamiokande is sensitive (Raffelt, 1997, Engel et al., 1990).
Instead, it points out the still remaining solar model dependencies of the previous SSM calculations and allowing other types of chains, it removes a hypothetical limitation, and accepting the presence of explosive chains as well, it probably presents a better approach to the actual Sun.

Citebase - Four neutrino oscillation analysis of the Superkamiokande atmospheric neutrino data
Four neutrino oscillation analysis of the Superkamiokande atmospheric neutrino data
Superkamiokande atmospheric neutrino data (contained and upward going through μ events) for 990 days are analyzed in the framework of four neutrinos (three active and one sterile neutrinos) without imposing constraints of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis.
Combining this result with the analysis by Giunti, Gonzarez-Garcia and Peña-Garay, it is found that the Large Mixing Angle and Vacuum Oscillation solutions of the solar neutrino problem are also allowed.

 Massive Neutrinos
In June 1998 an experimental group working at SuperKamiokande in Japan released evidence for neutrino oscillations and hence that at least one species of neutrino has mass.
One can measure the energy of the neutrinos received and one knows the path length difference of those arising from the near and the far side of the Earth, so one can relate the different proportions of muon neutrinos received upward going and downward going to the mass difference \Delta m.
But they cannot detect what the muon neutrinos oscillate into, so they don't know if these are tau neutrinos or a new species of sterile neutrinos (they do know they are not electron neutrinos).

Observations by the SuperKamiokande collaboration show that the flux of upward going muon neutrinos is less than the flux of the downward going muon neutrinos.
The only plausible explanation of this startling observation is that something is happening to the neutrinos while crossing the earth.
Recent results from the Solar Neutrino Observatory in Sudbury, Canada, together with previous results from SuperKamiokande, provide the first flux independent evidence for oscillations of electron neutrinos into mu or tau neutrinos.

After the discovery of neutrino oscillations by SuperKamiokande three years ago the measurements of their masses and flavor mixing are under way using various neutrino sources and energies.
The K2K experiment, which uses the KEK accelerator as the neutrino source and the SuperKamiokande for their detection, is sensitive to the oscillations observed in the atmospheric neutrinos.
The results obtained after one year of the run time provide a check of the oscillation parameters with the well determined beam properties using a set of near detectors and beam monitors.

Data from the SuperKamiokande experiment, located under the Japanese Alps, has for the first time produced evidence of neutrino oscillations that is generally accepted.
A brief background about neutrino oscillations will be given, followed by many details about the data from SuperKamiokande.

We have directly detected two kinds of "active" neutrinos, electron and muon type, and we indirectly infer a third kind, the tau neutrino.
The Superkamiokande experiment has recently given us good evidence that some of these neutrinos likely have nonzero rest masses.
However, when this result is combined with other hints of neutrino mass from solar neutrino observations and the Los Alamos LSND experiment we seem to require a fourth kind of neutrino.

 EW2000-Report
The issue of atmospheric neutrinos is pursued by SuperKamiokande, which now investigates the fate of the missing muonic neutrinos; its findings suggest that they are converted into another kind of "active" neutrinos (most likely those associated to the tau lepton), rather than into completely sterile particles.
Whilewe do not control the atmospheric neutrino flux and must largely rely on simulations, a direct experiment is being conducted wiht a controlled man-made muonic neutrino beam, produced at KEK (see fiugre caption).
It is quite striking that the results of SuperKamiokande converge to a lack of dependence of the observed spectrum both on energy and on distance (seasonal effects).
