Superbone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This means that it is impractical to use the slide as a transposition aid, unless there is enough time (and excess tubing on the valve slides) to retune every valve.
A further, related, limitation of this method is that the larger downward valve transpositions make the 7th and even 6th positions unusable, beyond the end of the slide.
Physically, a Superbone has the fully functioning slide of a traditional tenor trombone with 7 positions, when no valves are depressed.

Piston valve - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In addition to its three valves, the trumpet uses a small slide for pitch correction, while the tenorbass and bass trombone both use one or two rotary valves in addition to the slide.
The superbone does not fit in to any of the above categories.
Where piston (or rotary) valves are used, three is the normal minimum (as on a trumpet) and four is not uncommon.

 Holton TR395 Superbone
First played by recording artist Maynard Ferguson, the Holton MF Superbone could be described as the ultimate trombone.
Also called the double trombone, the TR395 combines all of the characteristics of a slide trombone with all of the advantages of a valve trombone.
The TR395 Superbone is free-blowing throughout its diversified system.

Maynard Ferguson: Chameleon / Conquistador - PopMatters Music Review
Somewhere in the middle is Stevie Wonder's "Livin' for the City" which reproduces the feel of the original fairly accurately, and has some nice solo work as well.
The Corea composition features a sizzling passé doble section that allows the rhythm section to spur the band and, later, the soloists into a white hot frenzy.
"Superbone Meets the Bad Man" hearkens back to Ferguson's days on the stage at Birdland and features the bandleader playing his Superbone, a valve/slide trombone of this own design.

Don Ellis - CONNECT, Powered By Sony
The orchestra's most memorable recordings were Autumn, Live at the Fillmore and Tears of Joy (all for Columbia).
After suffering a mid-'70s heart attack, Ellis returned to live performing, playing the "superbone" and a later edition of his big band featured Art Pepper.
Ellis's last recording was at the 1977 Montreux Jazz Fesival, a year before his heart finally gave out.

Subject: [TROMBONE-L:1141] Re: Superbone I heard the late Ashley Anderson give a very impressive demonstration on the Holton Superbone at the Bloomington Brass Congress in 1984.
While the possibility is there, the Superbone suffers from an incredibly small bore size, rendering the sound of a valve trombone.
I grew up with a King 2B slide/valve combo, and my little brother had a Conn 5G, so I once knew what I was talking about WRT valve trombones and their sounds.

Horntabs.net :: Superbone (To the rescue?)
I saw on MF.com a "SuperBone", a combination valve/slide trombone.
The SuperBone wasn't invented by Maynard, but he's the guy that made it popular.
Also you can't switch the valves to be on the right hand because the way you have to set it up, unlike a regular slide trombone where you can use the slide on either hand.

The player appears to be holding the horn with his heft hand clamped around the valve section (not playing the valves) - and is using the slide.
Conn did make a superbone type instrument (valves and slide) in the 20s.

Truth is, Don's version of the "Star War" theme is pretty questionable, but the originals are decent.
In particular, "Lyra" is a nice feature for Don's superbone, and I like the melody of the all-too-brief "Ursa." All of the tracks have a very late 70s sound to them…not that that's a bad thing, I have an affinity for that type of music having grown up with it.
I can see Ponch and John at the roller rink enjoying these tunes.
