The decision to integrate the technologies of stealth, supercruise, super-maneuverability and sensor fusion was the result of significant advances in each of these areas in the 1970s and 80s.
Supercruise is vital to the entire concept of a stealthy fighter.

Supercruise performance demonstrated in flight tests with the Raptor is nothing short of eye watering.
Supercruise has the same effect for the Raptor, and the same dynamics apply to the F-22 in an air-to-air fight.

 Pigs Forever? [F-111 Supercruise]
Supercruise is a roughly twofold force multiplier in its own right, a fact reflected in the USAF push to field its new GSTF expeditionary strike force built around two squadrons of supercruising F-22s, two thirds or less the size of a reinforced conventional expeditionary fighter wing.
The basic conclusion to be drawn is that a hypothetical supercruise capable F-111 propulsion package would completely transform the F-111's performance and break many of the survivability assumptions valid for the current configuration of the aircraft.
The obvious answer is with a fighter capable of sustained supercruise with a respectable load of internal weapons and fuel.

Called "supercruise," this characteristic allows the F/A-22 to efficiently cruise at supersonic airspeeds without using afterburners.
The combination of reduced observability and supercruise drastically shrinks surface-to-air engagement envelopes and minimizes threat capability to engage and shoot the F/A-22.
Designed for efficient supersonic operation without afterburner use (supercruise), and with increased durability over today's engines, the F119 is a very high thrust-to-weight ratio engine.

AussieEngineer RE:F-35 with supercruise 2/16/2005 9:54:50 PM When you look at the thrust to weight ratios of Rafale and Eurofighter, which can apparently supercruise it does not appear to be out of the realm of possibility for the F-35 to be able to supercruise especially considering the internal weapons carriage.
Supercruise greatly reduce your exposure time when you overfly heavily defended area and it also permit you to reduce the lethal radius of enemy's missile.
The specs for the F-35 deemed supercruise to be of limited value for a strike fighter geared toward ground attack role.

Supercruise (supersonic-cruise) is the ability to fly above Mach 1 without using the afterburner.
An aircraft that could supercruise would have the ability to get where it was needed faster than one without it, and thus have a greater combat persistency.

Supercruise was one of the key design requirements, along with stealth.
Higher speed means higher dynamic compression of intake air before the compressor, high temp of the compressed air and thus eventually exceeded temp limit for first row of turbine blades, a critical design parameter in any gas turbine.

F-22 demonstrates 'supercruise' for first time   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
In the context of the F-22 Raptor, supercruise is defined as the ability to cruise at speeds of one and a half times the speed of sound or greater without the use of afterburner for extended periods in combat configuration.
In fact, once operational, the F-22 will be able to fly large portions of its combat missions in supercruise mode, a key element to the aircraft's air dominance role.
"Its ability to supercruise will allow the F-22 larger patrol areas, and permit the Raptor to enter and exit hostile areas in quick fashion, reducing the time a pilot spends over an enemy's territory," he said.

Supercruise is often thought of as a new technology for fighters like F/A-22 or mabey Typhoon, so it might seem odd to ask if an "old" and "low-tech" fighter like J-8 can supercruise.
However, it is actually easier to make a supercruising turbojet aircraft than it is to make a supercruising turbofan aircraft as turbojets often have a better dry thrust/weight ratio and thrust decreases less with high speeds.
This the typ of supercruise that I was thinking of when I asked about the J-8.

Supersonic is when all the airflow around the aircraft is supersonic which happens at an approximate speed, variable depending on the aircraft, of greater than M1.3 and supercruise as discussed in the context of the F-22 is M1.5 or greater without afterburner.
The whole point of "Supercruise" is that it allows aircraft to position itself in optimum positions BEFORE and engagement, to QUICKLY enter and exit hostile airspace, to EXPAND the effective combat radius of action, to INCREASE weapons ranges/sortie rates and to decline battle at will when opposed.
Of course the Eurofighter has a supercruise capability and the practical application of this capability was a major design goal.

Published reports indicate the GE engine has demonstrated better supercruise performance than its conventional rival and it is very likely that GE's gamble with a more radical technology will yield the desired payoff.
Reports suggest the YF-22 consumes 30% less fuel in supercruise than an F-15 in afterburner, suggesting an SFC of about 1.5 lb/lbt/hr which is about twice the dry SFC of an F100-PW-100.
Therefore on a purely supercruise mission profile the additional fuel may not offer a gain in radius, however a mixed subsonic/supercruise profile almost certainly would, the gain inversely proportional to the ratio of time spent in supercruise vs subsonic cruise.
