Knoxville, Tennessee's Superdrag is the very essence of power pop, with astoundingly catchy melodies and harmonies and crunching, fuzzed-out guitars.
Superdrag's first album, Regretfully Yours ('96), sold pretty well on the strength of "Sucked Out," but their follow-up, the more ambitious and less accessible Head Trip in any Key ('98), did not.
Shortly thereafter, Superdrag parted ways with the unsupportive Elektra, self-releasing an album of B-sides and demos before resurfacing with a third LP on Arena Rock Records.

Superdrag has kept a following, that much is obvious, but adding to it is going to be hard work.
Superdrag lives in a mirrored cage of its own creation in which it's the people embracing music that dares to feature different instruments and textures and performance values that are the heretics, not themselves for persisting with a style that has stayed much the same for 35 years.

What's unique about Superdrag's major label debut, "Regretfully Yours", is the enthusiastic, against-the-grain power you can hear from the very first brigade of guitars they unleash on the 13 song disc.

Although there would be no movie stars in the house on this night, even Superdrag had their high-profile reasons for nearly missing the Valentine’s gig: They taped a performance for Late Night With Conan O’Brien earlier in the evening.
If Superdrag deserved props for hustling up to Albany to honor their Valentine’s show—despite the cancellation by Phantom Planet and the opener OK Go—they were rewarded when a fairly large and adoring crowd turned out to see them anyway, cheering their nearly every move.
Still, as Superdrag unleashed their dense sonic attack on anthemic songs such as “Keep It Close to Me,” “Phaser” and “Destination Ursa Major,” the dynamic Davis, underneath the stage lights, virtually appeared to vibrate along with the music.

Like the lovable louts in the Replacements or the countrified punks in Uncle Tupelo, Superdrag (singer/guitarist John Davis, drummer Don Coffey, bassist Sam Powers and newcomer Mike Harrison) seems destined for the hallowed musical boneyard of bands whose genre defining pinache and influence far outweigh their record-sells and TRL appearances.
They've been to the mountaintop of major-label glad-handing thanks to their debut, Regretfully Yours, been slapped on the ass by the folks at MTV and rubbed frets on tour with the likes of Green Day and Weezer.
Now, three years after the unpleasantness, Superdrag are back doing what they do best - cutting through the bullshit with a wall of fuzz guitar, a pummeling 4/4 beat and a freakish pop sensibility.

Although there’s still undercurrents of pop that run through all of Superdrag’s latest songs, the band kicks it nice and easy with the same amorphous straight-up rock vibe that can be found, with a trained ear, in the music of everyone from The Beatles and The Replacements to Cheap Trick.
Superdrag tries its hand on such orders, though when it pours embarrassingly sappy lyrics and campfire-style acoustic guitars ("Safe and Warm") and the sure-fire road to a hangover, blues-rock cum AC/DC ("Stu"), it’s clear the band hasn’t mastered every aspect of mixology.
