Supergirl - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Supergirl´s secret identity is a closely held secret, but it is known to Superman, her foster parents and the Legion of Super-Heroes, of which she served as a member until resigning her membership.
As a result of events at the end of the Infinite Crisis, Supergirl was transported to the 31st century, where, because of the future technology and unfamiliarity, she believes she is dreaming.
Supergirl is one of the characters who has shared the same voice actor through her stay in the DC Animated Universe, voiced by Nicholle Tom from her premiere in Little Girl Lost, to her final mission in Far From Home.

Supergirl (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Supergirl uses it under the tutelage of Zaltar to make a butterfly-like creature; this creature breaches a window of the community and in the decompression that follows, the Omegahedron (which also powers the city) is sucked out into space.
Supergirl and Selena repeatedly battle in various ways until Selena uses her powers to put Supergirl in an inescapable prison known as the Phantom Zone.
The entire film was shot, edited, and overlooked by the WB company, however, two weeks or so before the film's original Summer 1984 premiere date, WB dropped the film due to the third installment of the Superman films, and the damning reviews it gained.

DVD Review - Supergirl: Limited Edition   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Why is it that "Supergirl" has always been treated like the ugly duckling in the shadow of its overly powerful cousin, "Superman?" Whatever the reasons are, Anchor Bay Entertainment decided to put an end to it and to bring "Supergirl" back to its full glory to give viewers a renewed chance to appreciate this film.
The newly created extended cut of the film inserts a lot of character development in the movie which I found dragged the pacing down too much for its own good, but on the other hand, it offers some valuable explanations and back story that was missing from the original cut of the film.
Entirely familiar with the film, the rumors, the gossip, the production, the history and other aspects of the movie, he makes the perfect host and manages with ease to squeeze the most interesting tidbits out of the director at any given time.

If there is to be another film, it should the follow the Supergirl comics alot more, the 1984 film plays too much on the original early Supergirl of the 1950/60's.
In closing, the film is uninspiring and unrealisitic and I think that the Superman films still have the edge with suspense and excitment and much more going on.
Supergirl's transformation to her alter ego Linda Lee is amazing - much more effective than putting on a pair of glasses and slicking your hair back, like her cousin Superman.

The film focuses on Supergirls adventures when she arrives on earth, from her FANTASTIC ariel ballet entrance, to her final battle with the witch Selena, portrayed by a darn-good-fun-loving Faye Dunaway.
SUPERGIRL is the first film that I have given ever that respect to and it's a real shame that it wasn't released the way it should have been.
Despite all the praise I've given to this new version, the film still does have flaws, particularly in the writing department, though you do come to realize that is not necessarily the fault of the screenwriter when considering the sequence of events that lead to the film being made.

The film is full of camp little moments like these that are pulled off only by the abilities of the performers.
Although the film was shot in wide screen there is little meaningful composition beyond the 1.33 frame imposed by television.
After watching the three versions of this film available it seems that more is not necessarily better since there is far too much padding in the longer versions.

With Supergirl, Goldsmith fashions an entirely serviceable adventure score that attempts to distance itself from the mastery of the original soundtrack, while still being entertaining and compositionally sound.
Supergirl begins with a lengthy, exciting Overture (actually a longer end credits track used for the original international cut of the film) that introduces all of the major themes.
An uneasy, dark patch of orchestral color characterizes "The Phantom Zone," with helpless orchestral renditions of Supergirl's motif constantly overpowered by an electrifying onslaught of choral forces, hints of the tritones and full Monster theme, shimmering keyboards, and general impressionism that seems to be a logical extension of Ravel's lavish 19th Century orchestrations.

THE CINEMA LASER DVD REVIEW-- SUPERGIRL
SUPERGIRL is like a comic book brought to life, and on that level the movie is quite enjoyable.
Everything in the film is larger than life, so it impossible to take anything in the film too seriously- after thirty seconds of Faye Dunaway’s scenery chewing performance as the evil sorceress Selena, you’ll know what I mean.
The plot of SUPERGIRL involves the Kryptonian city of Argo, which was saved from extinction by a resourceful scientist Zaltar (Peter O'Toole), who used the power of the Omegahedron to transport Argo into inner-space before Krypton exploded.

The scene where Supergirl rescues Ethan and flies him to safety is reminiscent of the "Can you read my mind" sequence from Superman I. When discussing the virtues of this film, it is impossible to omit Ms.
For example, when Supergirl arrives on earth and emerges from her spaceship, she is fully clothed in her Supergirl outfit.
The film is perhaps most touching in these sequences, with expanses of wheat fields blowing in the wind and with a young man who can't figure out what part in destiny his great powers are meant to play.

Former “Supergirl” comic scribe Peter David confirmed too, via his official site, that a film is definitely in the works.

According to Goldsman's people, the treatment would not be a version of any one particular Supergirl, but instead an agglomeration of several different comic book incarnations...the aim being to produce a dark and less-than-sunny version, which doesn't sound like either version of Supergirl as I've written her.

However, when Supergirl was first released in 1984, it was pretty much panned by critics who had grown used to the Superman series.
The tone of this film is very different from the Superman flicks, which may have been part of the reason why it was panned so badly on its original release.
Still, if one can accept the premise, the film does have its redeeming qualities, and is a fun little romp into the world of the feminine side of Krypton's most famous family.

Although she went through many different incarnations over the years, Supergirl proved a popular figure where DC were able in essence to repackage Superman for teenage girls.

 Moviehole.net - Supergirl : Limited Edition (DVD)
Made just after the completion of “Superman 3” and again produced by the Salkinds (the group that had made the three Superman films), “Supergirl” centres on Kara (Helen Slater), a beautiful but dimish Kryptonian, sent to Earth to recover the planet’s magical power source, The Omegahedron.
Bursting out of the water — with her “Supergirl” suit mysteriously adorning her body — she flies into action, ultimately going head to head with the villainous Omegahedron snatcher, Selena (Faye Dunaway), en evil sorceress hell-bent on causing death and destruction.
That could be the fittingly cast Helen Slater as Supergirl and her alter-ego Linda Lee, it could be the fun escapist fare of a film such as this or it could be the fact that it’s the next best thing to an actual “Superman” movie.

Within it's contents lies the true heart of a beautiful hero, and Goldsmith compliments the film with very memorable melodies, full blown orchestra, and a heart-warming variation on the John Willliams theme for 'Superman', to name a few aspects.
The theme itself, has won more praise and acclaim than John Williams' 'Superman'' theme, and many cues are thought to be more expressive of the film than the rest of the music contained in the other four films in the 'Superman' series.
Bottom Line: The film is a grand classic, and the score buttrices the adventure, suspence, and heart the film has to offer.

Of the many rare qualities possessed by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the more endearing is his seemingly cheerful acceptance of demands that he follow in the footsteps of others.
John Williams' instant classic score for Superman The Movie was the template that the later film's producers must have required Goldsmith to follow.
And so he did, as witnessed in the 'Overture', with a stirring march followed by a love theme, heard first in the horns against swirling strings, in an orchestral style that is pure Williams.
