Supergrass - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Supergrass are a rock band from Oxford, England who were at their peak in the Britpop era of the mid-1990s.
Supergrass' origins lie in the band The Jennifers, formed at Wheatley Park School, which featured a 16-year-old Coombes on vocals and Goffey (then 18) on drums.
Supergrass was well received critically and commercially, but did not reap the same level of success as its predecessors.

Supergrass have come a long way since their heyday as the cheeky-chappy boys of Britpop.
The crowd was, as could probably be expected, predominately in their late 20s/early 30s – people who obviously had come to relive their youth for a couple of hours and become that young irresponsible, drunken youth lout once again.
Supergrass have decided to explore their musical talents in ways that would have been unexpected some years ago.

Supergrass returned in May 1999 with a punchy new single, "Pumping On Your Stereo", taken from their self-titled third album, although ultimately this release did not enjoy the commercial success of their previous efforts.

Helping to make a plethora of sound and scope out of Life On Other Planets, Supergrass go balls-out on essential listens “Never Done Nothing Like That Before” and the very hip “Grace.” Gaz Coombes and company have made every hour of wait worth it, ensuring their seat with some of UK rock's finest.
Supergrass' last album, "In it for the Money," made them an all-out rock n' roll favorite (with maybe a pinch of glam or pop in there).

Supergrass follow up their second album with a self-titled work that's hard to place sonically.
Supergrass has relaxed their style in some places by creating deeper grooves with the instrumentation focused more on the band itself, with its acoustic guitars and funky basslines, and removed the sharper elements of orchestration featured on In It For The Money, giving the album a very lush sound.
Supergrass is still a worthwhile album by any measure but in comparison to their first two brilliant releases, it may appear to be a slip up.

Perhaps because of its age -- two of the trio were still in their teens when they recorded their debut single -- the band also brings in elements of decidedly unhip groups like Elton John, as well as classic rockers like David Bowie, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones.
With an exuberant, youthful enthusiasm, Supergrass tied all of their influences together in new surprising ways, where a Buzzcocks riff could slam into three-part harmonies out of "Crocodile Rock," or have a galloping music hall rhythm stutter like the best moments of the Who.
Consisting of guitarist/vocalist Gaz Coombes, bassist Mickey Quinn, and drummer Danny Goffey, Supergrass released their first single, the semiautobiographical "Caught by the Fuzz," in the summer of 1994 on the indie label Backbeat; Parlophone signed the band and reissued the single in the fall of the year.

The band —; whose moniker is British slang for a police informer — first hit with the amphetamine bubblegum 7-inch "Caught by the Fuzz," which chronicles a lad's first pot bust and deals with that situation's primary crisis: that is, Mom's gonna be pissed.
Both of those singles (along with their respective flipsides, "Lose It" and "Sitting Up Straight") appear on Supergrass' full-length debut, I Should Coco, along with a bounty of other hook-strewn ditties extolling the giddy exultation and dopey abandon of post-pubescent youth.

 Illinois Entertainer » Supergrass review
That’s not to say the group’s previous projects didn’t have elements of evolution or seasoned songwriting, but nowadays the group’s alternative rock revelry and occasionally mischievous subject matter have been replaced with a more subdued, introspective disposition that’s also made for a remarkably moving, nine-track listening experience.
Yet Supergrass couldn’t keep the mood from slipping with yet more reserved recreations; a short segment highlighted the subdued keyboard dueling of the Coombes boys, which included some short tranquil electronic samples.
As a result of such distracting decisions, Supergrass’ latest visit to the States paled in overall comparison to 2003’s Life On Other Planets tour, and despite some glimpses of greatness, would’ve benefited from more cohesive pacing.
