gemellus superior muscle (anatomy) - General Practice Notebook   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Gemellus superior (plural: gemelli) is one of the muscles of the gluteal region.
It inserts into the posteromedial and middle surface of the greater trochanter of the femur via the tendon to obturator internus.
Gemellus superior is innervated by the nerve to obturator internus (L5-S2).

Proximal attachments are: the inguinal ligament, the external lip of the iliac crest, the posterior surface of the sacrum and coccyx, the sacrotuberous ligament, the ischial tuberosity, the margin of the pubic arch, the body of the pubis, and the pubic tubercle.
The surface marking of the superior border of the piriformis muscle is indicated by a line joining the skin dimple formed by the posterior superior iliac spine, to the superior border of the greater trochanter of the femur.
The superior and inferior gemelli arise from the ischial spine and ischial tuberosity, respectively.

Piriformis muscle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The piriformis (from Latin piriformis = "pear shaped") is a muscle in the gluteal region of the lower limb.
It exits the pelvis through the greater sciatic foramen to insert on the greater trochanter of the femur.
Its tendon often joins with the tendons of the superior gemellus, inferior gemellus, and obturator internus muscles prior to insertion.

Gazi Tıp Fakültesi - Gazi Medical Journal
The gluteal muscles consist of the large glutei (maximus, medius and minimus), which are mainly extensors and abductors of the thigh at the hip joint.
The smaller muscles, which are lateral rotators of the joint, are situated more deeply; they include pirifomis, obturators internus and externus, the superior and inferior gemelli, and quadratus femoris (these actions are, however, modified by the initial position of the thigh) (1-6).
The right accessory gluteal muscle arose from the lower fibers of the gluteus maximus muscle, medial to the sacrotuberous ligament as a single bundle, and extended caudally and laterally close to the point of insertion as two different bundles.
