His latest project, Superjoint Ritual, are altogether more frightening: as the burning mess of pot leaves, pentagrams, and pitchforks on the cover of their debut disc suggests, the band’s violent tales and bludgeoning assault take Anselmo’s macabre vision to a new extreme.
Superjoint Ritual began more than 10 years ago as a loose collaboration among Anselmo and Louisiana buddies Jimmy Bower (Down, Eyehategod) and Joe Fazzio.
The twin centerpieces "4 Songs" and "Superjoint Ritual" build monstrous piles of depraved riffage, proving once again that Anselmo’s twisted creative impulses can’t be contained by rock stardom alone.

Superjoint Ritual - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Superjoint Ritual is a New Orleans Sludge/Hardcore/Crossover band formed by Phil Anselmo, Joe Fazzio, and Jimmy Bower in the early 1990s, later to be joined by Hank Williams III, and Kevin Bond.
Their style can be considered a mix of Pantera's style of groove metal and hardcore punk in the vein of Agnostic Front.
According to Jimmy Bower in an interview, the name Superjoint Ritual comes from a lyric in the Darkthrone song, The Pagan Winter.

Now, he's on a whirlwind tour with another side project, Superjoint Ritual, in support of their new album, "Use Once and Destroy." After that, he'll hook up with Down again to headline the second stage at Ozzfest.
And that's not to mention his wife's folk rock band Southern Isolation, in which he plays guitar, or his main gig Pantera, which is due for a new release in the near future.
To be honest, Superjoint Ritual is my least favorite of Anselmo's three main projects.

MSJ-Interview with Phil Anselmo of Superjoint Ritual
In 1993, or just the 90's in general, Pantera put the spin on heavy metal as it was, so there was all these bands basically trying to catch up with Pantera, and now today in the 2000's they sure have caught up and they sounded exactly like Pantera sounded.
I guess I've said it once and I will say it again, when heavy metal met with hardcore music and the crossover began, that allegiance of two styles of music was a beautiful one compared to other allegiances of music you could put together.
Well, we are kind of in the same situation here with music, and Superjoint to me is definitely an answer to any person who is sick of what they are hearing and they miss the rawness of old school heavy metal hardcore.

The group's consisted of Phil Anselmo (vocals), guitarists Jim Bower and Kevin Bond, drummer Joseph Fazzio, with none other than Hank Williams III on bass (a side note- Phil did vocals and bass duties for the band's recordings, but when they went to play live, he concentrated on the vocals).
According to someone named bower, Superjoint Ritual, started to approach the writing and recording of their debut with "the perfect 15-year-old mentality of having everything loud, everything on 10, getting loaded, and letting whatever happens, happen." It was recorded in a rehearsal space, turned into a recording studio in Anselmo's backyard.
Superjoint Ritual supported the album with a summer tour the same year.

From the looks of the CD and ads that have been supporting this CD by Sanctuary Records it would be a set of pipes and j's all over to mellow out on and rock hard, but what we get is a great heavy metal album that is heavy and very angry to the core.

The lead singer of Pantera, Down, and now Superjoint Ritual has seen dozens of recent nu-metal pretenders cop elements of both his ferocious howl and his bellicose stage presence, as well as Pantera's highly regimented crunch.
Anselmo isn't the only Superjoint member with a pedigree; fellow New Orleans, La., native Jimmy Bowers (guitar) is a member of long-running underground metallists Eyehategod.
If the members' past musical ventures offer any clue, Superjoint Ritual promises to be even more combustible in live performance than on record.
