 RTÉ News: Supermacs fined for breach of food hygiene regulations
Supermacs founder and owner, Pat McDonagh, was said by his legal representatives to be "gutted" by the prosecution - his first in over twenty years.
Supermacs, which has 41 restaurants nationwide, blamed a problem with management at the two locations for the hygiene breaches.
An environmental health officer described equipment in the kitchens of one of the restaurants as filthy and said that a box of raw chicken was being stored beside mixed kebab salad in breach of food regulations when she inspected the Supermacs restaurant at Newcastle Road, Galway on October 7th last year.

Supermac's say their public liability insurance costs have rocketed in the past few years as a result of the growing compensation culture and the worrying trend of bogus or exaggerated claims.
Speaking at a press conference in Dublin today, McDonagh said he recognised the absolute right of the public to compensation in genuine cases, but said he felt the compensation culture had taken too strong a grip on the Irish psyche.

Three creditors claim that former Galway Supermacs manager Kevin Blair has been buying sports cars and living luxuriously since taking over as president of the Claddagh Development Group, which has 17 US branches.
Mr Blair, who is originally from Ohio, moved to Ireland to work for Supermacs before opening the chain of Irish-themed US restaurants in 2001 with Mr McDonagh's backing.
