Superman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Superman, nicknamed "The Man of Steel," is a fictional character and superhero who first appeared in Action Comics #1 in June of 1938 and eventually became one of the most popular and well-known comic book icons of all time.
Superman possesses extraordinary powers which render him, as stated in the lead-in to the 1950s television series, "faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound".
Superman's daily martyrdom is reflected tellingly in print during his reappearance in the 1996 miniseries Kingdom Come, where he is pictured as a bearded carpenter with a long beam of wood across his back, mirroring a Christ-like image of a man who gave himself for a world that, in that storyline, did not love him.

Superman may seem old-fashioned, quaint, and "whitebread" when compared to the various obsessed "dark avengers" who command the lion's share of the comic book market; but his appeal has lived on, and he continues to be a driving force in the comic book medium after more than sixty years.

Good music, musical risk-taking, classic Streisand..for me this is her best.
The pop success of Streisand was now in full gear, and the songs on Superman were further proof that Barbra, a singer who barely scratched the pop singles chart a decade earlier, was now encroaching into new territory, and radio was finally embracing her.
Streisand was known for her chutzpah, and her pose on the album cover wearing a skimpy pair of white short-shorts with a tight white t-shirt emblazoned with the Superman logo seemed absolutely fitting.

The new series, starring Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell, is garnering excellent ratings - but there is still a significant number of people who would like to see a reunion movie based on the original 1978 series.
However, in 2001, Bryan Singer, the director of the X-Men movies and the upcoming Superman Returns, was set to bring back Battlestar Galactica, updating it for the modern age while still including a number of the original cast members.
Sadly, scheduling conflicts and studio politics prevented the production from seeing the light of day, but there are still viewers waiting to see the original series concluded.
