Supermarine Stranraer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Supermarine Stranraer marked the end of biplane flying-boat development for the Royal Air Force.
The structure was mainly duralumin, with the hull covered with sheet metal and the wings with fabric.
17 Stranraers were built in Britain and 40 in Canada, serving with the RCAF until 1945.

 Supermarine Stranraer
It was turned down but Supermarine proceeded with the type as a private venture first known as the Southampton V. After all a contract was placed in 1933 for a prototype powered by two 820hp Bristol Pegasus IIIM and the type became known as the Stranraer.
The Stranraers hull and structure were of metal with the wings and empennage covered with fabric; in some places stainless steel was used.
The Stranraer served well but lacked the later required longer range, so they were assigned to secondary roles from 1943, being supplanted by the Catalina and Canso; the final aircraft was withdrawn from the RCAF on January 20, 1946.

The Stranraer was the final development of the Southampton flying boat to be put into production and was one of the world's last biplane flying boat.
Two units were equipped with Stranraers during the early part of the Second World War.
Curiously, the Stranraer was built in greater numbers and had a longer service life outside the United Kingdom than with the Royal Air Force.

The Stranraer was a large aircraft for its day with a wingspan of 85 feet 2 inches, a length of 54 feet 10 inches and a height of 21 feet 9 inches.
The Stranraers served faithfully on both coasts during the early part of the war.
The Stranraers proved to be good seaworthy aircraft but their antiquate biplane design eventually led to their being relegated to training duties.

First of all the Supermarine Stranraer was a two engine, two-wing seaplane that landed on its belly in water.
Of the Stranraers converted to civilian use in British Columbia, only two survive – one, decorated with Royal Air Force colors (even though the plane only operated in Canada with the RCAF and is part of the Queen Charlotte Airline fleet) is on display at the RAF museum at Hendon, England.

Called the "whistling bird cage" because of her look and the sound of the wind through her many brace wires, the Supermarine Stranraer was the last of the biplane flying boats designed by R.J. Mitchell, the man who designed the Spitfire.
The Stranraer was used in RCAF service on anti-sub patrol until replaced by Canso and Catalina aircraft mid-war.
The last Stranraer left RCAF service in 1946 and one (No.920) survived in commercial service on Canada's west coast until 1958, later to go to the RAF museum in Hendon.

The Stranraer was of mostly metal construction, and ruggedly built…with a lot of redundancies, which made it stable as get-out, but something of a tank in a pilot’s eyes.
The biplane configuration made the Stranraer a wonderful spotting platform, although it did have 3 lewis machine guns as armament, and could carry a limited amount of bombs or depth charges…it was lauded mostly for it’s ability to loiter, very useful in anti-submarine warfare.
The Stranraer went through several modifications during pre-war, wartime, and post-war service (some of them were still up and running long after WW2), but the basic hull configuration stayed near the same as the original 1934 version.

Assuming that the drawings are accurate (and in this day in age that is a risky assumption with regard to any drawings), the only issue I perceive is that the rudder appears to be too narrow in chord.

If it were not for Canada, the Stranraer would be even more obscure.
For example, they clearly point out that the preserved Stranraer has engines different from the original aircraft.

There were three biplane flying boats on the RAF Order of Battle, the twin engined Saunders-Roe "London", the twin engined Supermarine "Stranraer" and the single engined Supermarine "Walrus" or, as it was universally known in the RAF, the "Shagbat".
The "London" was used by 202 and 240 Squadrons until early 1941 and the "Stranraer" by 240 Squadron until 1940 on anti-submarine patrols.
The chosen successor to the "Walrus" was another biplane flying boat, the Supermarine "Sea Otter", which closely resembled its illustrious predecessor, except that the "Sea Otter" had a tractor engine in place of the "Walrus's" pusher engine.
