Supermarionation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Supermarionation (standing for super marionette animation) is a puppetry technique devised by the British production company AP Films and used extensively in its numerous action-adventure series, the most famous of which is undoubtedly Thunderbirds.
A common misconception is that this technique is a form of animation, which it is not.
Refined supermarionation techniques were used in the South African children's science fiction show Interster in the late 1970s.

DVD Review of Supercar: Complete Set - DVDtoons!   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Supermarionation is a blanket term for the effect gained by having marionettes being given the ability to lip synch with dialog and blink their eyes while engaging in fantastic yet oddly believable adventures.
Supercar establishes a Supermarionation tradition of naming the series after a vehicle, a tradition that would not be broken until the premiere of Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons.
I always thought it was interesting that the Supermarionation shows--- British in origin--- used predominantly American characters, and Sylvia reports that it was a matter of not only appealing to American networks, but it usually was simply logical; after all, England did not have too many desert bases or a space program.

Zero-X - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Zero-X (spelling variants include: "Zero X" or "Zero - X") is a fictitious human spacecraft appearing in the Supermarionation series of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson.
Although publicity material for the various Supermarionation series, and the TV Century 21 comic book, made references to connections between the series, the Zero-X is the only confirmed connection between two series, appearing in the Thunderbirds feature film Thunderbirds are GO and in the first episode of the next Supermarionation series, Captain Scarlet.
It has been suggested that some of the detail this article or section currently has on the first Zero-X mission should be moved to Thunderbirds Are GO.

Thunderbirds (1964), in my view the best of the Supermarionation series, was about a secret organization called "International Rescue" which was devoted to saving disaster victims from peril on land, sea, air or up in space.
International Rescue's headquarters were based on a remote pacific island where the organization's founder, former Astronaut Jeff Tracy, along with his five sons operate a variety of highly sophisticated vehicles, each tailored to the needs of a given emergency.
Stingray (1964) the 3rd Supermarionation series involved the undersea adventures of the crew of the World Aquanaut Security Patrol (WASP) submarine called Stingray and their encounters with various undersea races.

Anderson had helped to design a new form of puppetry called ‘supermarionation.’ This allowed the creators a greater ability to lip-sync voices and to give the puppets a more ‘realistic’ look with the use of finer wiring systems.
I’ve really enjoyed watching all of these ‘supermarionation’ series, in part for their entertainment value, but also for the opportunity to see how Anderson’s work evolved and improved with each one.
I would still say that of all the Gerry Anderson ‘supermarionation’ creations, “Thunderbirds”; is my favorite, which is why I gotta get ahold of that DVD set and am looking forward to the upcoming motion picture live action version.

What set Supermarionation apart from previous puppet shows was that the puppets were done in a much more realistic fashion.
Like later Supermarionation series, there is a benign but unmistakable air of militarism inherent in Fireball XL5.
Like earlier entries in A & E’s Supermarionation collection, A & E was given digitally remastered transfers to use by Carlton, who distributes the Anderson catalog in the UK.

But after the third programme, Gerry and his team which consisted of Sylvia Anderson (who was to be his wife), Reg Hill and John Read set up the very famous Supermarionation and their first project for that was Supercar.
This was had a lot more quality and adventure in compared to his previous films because the puppets could talk with the dialogue and were able to do a lot more then they previously were able to do.

The early Supermarionation marionettes were made primarily of wood and leather (used as the hinge on the moving lip); the wires were fine tungsten metal.
Supermarionation was first developed for "Supercar" (though electronic lip synch and steel wire were used in "Four Feather Falls") and used for every Anderson puppet production through "The Investigator" series.
The term "Supermarionation" was coined for the Andersons' animation projects performed through the use of high-tech electronic marionettes, or super-marionette-animation.

This four disc DVD set includes all 32 episodes of the battle between the forces of Spectrum and the deadly Martian Mysterons, remastered in Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound and augmented with a variety of special features.
While the Supermarionation era would continue for a couple of years after Captain Scarlet, by 1970 Anderson would move on to live action work with Space:1999, leaving Captain Scarlet as perhaps the most artistically fully realized work of his puppetry productions (although each of his series has its partisans).

While many of the 20 tracks on the CD—the second platter in a planned multivolume series devoted to the miscellaneous "Supermarionation" scores—are comparatively pugnacious, they're also powerful and persuasive.
Suites dedicated to episodes like "Winged Assassin" and "Manhunt" are solidly threatening, interweaving martial motifs with ill-omened interludes, just as the brisk "Expo 2068" and "Fire at Rig 15" are punctuated with understated yet ominous moments.

The Supermarionation puppet shows of Gerry Anderson were very much part of my staple TV diet when I was a child.
I was also an avid reader of their companion comic, TV21, as well as having a collection of vinyl records on which episodes from the TV series were reproduced.
Anderson, however, was not all that thrilled about working with puppets, but he has gone down on record as saying, “But I did realise that our company was creating a very sophisticated method of making these kinds of films” (1).

When I mentioned Supermarionation, I was mainly refering to the show as more of a comical spoof, alternate flipside to the original series, something you would see on SNL or Mad TV.
