		In Superstar, Mary attempts to defeat the odds by winning a talent contest and the heart of the most popular guy in school (played by funny SNL comedian Will Farrell).
		Superstar is a tedious, one joke movie that's more obnoxious than anything else.
		Molly Shannon is a comedian of range and she proves it in her physical shtick, but watching this character in a full length movie didn't work at all.

		You've seen them come and go at the theaters, movies that are painful examples of why many ten-minute skits are best left to the small screen, with titles such as " Coneheads ", " Stuart Saves His Family ", and " A Night at the Roxbury ".
		However, Mary reasons that her only chance to be with Sky is to become a 'superstar', and she promptly enters the school's 'Let's Fight V.D.' talent contest, in which the grand prize is a trip to Hollywood to be an extra in a movie with 'positive moral values'.
		Though Shannon is somewhat affecting as the movie's underdog protagonist, she is exploited in a number of idiotic situations that reduces her character to nothing more than a running joke.

		Jesus Christ Superstar is one of those rare films that not only entertains but also has the benefit of according a good deal of its viewers with a life changing experience.
		One of the many magnificent things that this film does is avoid the temptation to present the characters in their well known but one-dimensional roles and therefore play down the controversy this film created.
		There is nothing unique, of course, about a movie that focuses on the life of the man who is considered by many, many people (rumour has it even more than read my reviews on a regular basis!!) to be the Son of God.

		While the plot is well-worn and somewhat clumsily put together, the fine performance of Shannon as the main character powers the movie along pretty well until the film stumbles to its predictable conclusion.

		I harbored a vain hope that this might kill the SNL movie for good, but, only a year later, Superstar is being foisted upon us (and undoubtedly there's something else waiting in the wings).
		To fill in the dead spots, Superstar adds a lame romantic comedy subplot, a few musical numbers (which are surprisingly entertaining), and several tired motion picture parodies ( Carrie, Armageddon, etc.).
		Superstar 's director is Bruce McCulloch, a relatively unknown Canadian filmmaker who has two movies in theaters at the same time (the other is Dog Park).

	Superstar Movie Review
		SUPERSTAR I found to be an enjoyable documentary to watch.
		It wasn't too long and it didn't bore me. To the best of my knowledge, SUPERSTAR is not on video cassette [actually it is; I just saw it in my videostore yesterday, under "Andy Warhol, Superstar" -Moderator], but is still running in the small arty type theaters.
		I don't recommend SUPERSTAR for a general audience, but for people who are interested in Andy Warhol.

		A talent show promises to be her ticket to stardom (the winning prize is a role in "a movie with positive moral values"), and she won't let her loser status or any hostile cheerleaders stand in her way.
		What makes Superstar more than just a collection of bad high school memories is that, though the formulaic plot redeems Mary, the movie as a whole isn't so sure.
		Even though this movie does rely on Hollywood conventions (like mawkish, one-dimensional romance) and is silly beyond its own goal (that ridiculous God spectacle that "guides" Mary), it redeems itself through the hilarious tree-smooching scenes, which are priceless, as well as many others.
