  Superstarved by Gravity Kills
The material found on Superstarved should feel familiar to any longterm fan, as Gravity Kills has continued mixing industrial rock sludge with underlying pop sensibilities that found them much success on their 1996 self-titled debut.
Jeff Scheel's gritty, nasal vocals have only grown more aggressive during the band's hiatus, and he is in top form throughout Superstarved, lacing each song with bitter anguish as he pours his heart and soul into the music.
Superstarved is an impressive third album as it never once drifts into obscurity or loses its pace.

finally, the title track, "superstarved" sees the band breaking the most new ground on the album, moving from a barely pulsating verse into a drum and bass-influenced chorus thrown into a blender with vocal distortion and Duddenhoffer's trademark guitars.
Although I'm sad to see them go, Superstarved is a fitting finale for Gravity Kills - they went out fighting with energy in their instruments and the unquenchable fire still stuck in Scheel's throat.

Superstarved basically picks up right where the band had left off, as a solid Nine Inch Nails-derived performance, with more of an emphasis on the metal edge than their aforementioned inspirators.
Gravity Kills has, from their inception, struggled to break out of their Nine Inch Nails mold, and it now seems that they may have plateaued in their ability to do so, perhaps inherently with the dark industrial premise and a voice as deep as Scheel's.

On Superstarved, Gravity Kills' third release (and first for Sanctuary by the St. Louis outfit), the industrial, pop and hard rock synthesis is reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails, Stabbing Westward and Orgy at a time when heavy music is sinking into darker and heavier guitar-driven levels of intensity.
Hence a paradox: They have the potential to be huge and exciting in a world of Hatebreeds and Poison The Wells while also being perceived as having come too late to the gate.
Either way, Superstarved is a well-built listen, well produced and worthy of your pocket change and lint.

Not too far off from their previous works though, this effort is still easily describable as an amalgamation of the likes of NIN, Filter and older Stabbing Westward, all packaged in a driving, commercially oriented brand of pulsing modern electro metal.
Instead, perhaps what hinders this album the most is its lack of experimental textures and song structures that many of their peers have been able to pull off so well.
With this being the case, "Superstarved" feels like an album that although is a bit lacking on depth, still accomplishes its task of laying down a wealth of sleekly crafted, albeit somewhat uninspiring electro tinged modern metal.
