Supertramp's major problem is an increasing dichotomy between their rhapsodic aural style and a glib, end-of-the-empire pessimism.

Supertramp was formed in England in 1969 by keyboardist/vocalist Roger Davies.
Supertramp practically *owned* 1979 with their mega-smash album from that year, "Breakfast In America." The British band had been making creative, irresistible pop/jazz/rock for nine years and five albums by this time, but "Breakfast," the sixth album, was The Big One for the group, a #1 smash on the album charts all over the world.
To a small degree, this was true; but it's also true that Supertramp had evolved a keen sense of catchy pop sounds, probably the best of the late 1970's, and their songwriting had moved into a witty, and deliciously biting style that was disarming and yet bouyant.

Fifteen tracks clocking in at a generous 79 minutes, traipse through their mid-late '70s prime years (two early and thankfully out-of-print albums from 1970 and 1971 are not-surprisingly omitted), hitting most of their best, and all of their most popular material.
Beating Genesis to the punch, Supertramp -- named after a cult classic book, W.H. Davies' The Autobiography of a Supertramp -- meshed their prog-rock with intricate pop, goosing it with a bit of jazz and blues courtesy of John Helliwell's spotlight stealing woodwinds.
