Topic: Supervolcano

In the News (Tue 2 Dec 08)

NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Supervolcano   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
At first, supervolcano was not a technical term used in volcanology, but more recently, in 2003 and 2004, the term has been used in articles.
Though there is no well-defined minimum size for a "supervolcano", there are at least two types of volcanic eruption that have been identified as supervolcanoes: massive eruptions and large igneous provinces.
An eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano was originally one of the scenarios depicted in the docu-drama End Day, but has been excluded from all airings to date for unknown reasons and is only presently mentioned at the show's BBC website.

Supervolcano uses special effects to show a 600C cloud of debris from the volcano killing everyone in a 60-mile zone around the park and the devastation of nearby Salt Lake City and Denver.
Supervolcano is believed to be one of the BBC's most expensive TV shows in terms of its hourly cost: £2.8m for two hours of screen time, compared with the £700,000 to £1m an hour which even lavish BBC1 costume dramas cost.
Supervolcano is one of the highlights of the £178m BBC1 winter season beginning in January.

Could the supervolcano nightmare come true?
Supervolcanoes may not look much - most do not even have the traditional cone of a Vesuvius or a Mount St Helens - but their potential for destruction is many times greater than a traditional volcanic eruption.
If the Yellowstone supervolcano were to erupt in a similar fashion the ash that it would spew out would cover three-quarters of North America in a layer deep enough to kill crops and other plants.
Supervolcano depicts the Yellowstone caldera erupting over several days, progressively "unzipping" the build-up of underground pressure in a series of eruptions around the rim of the crater rather than releasing everything all at once in one giant eruption.

Supervolcanoes are on a totally different scale to ordinary volcanoes: Mount St Helens released enough magma to bury London beneath an ash layer a metre thick.

The scale of the portrayed eruption is similar to the eruption of the Huckleberry Ridge Tuff at Yellowstone 2.1 million years ago.
ANSWER: The term "supervolcano" implies an eruption of magnitude 8 on the Volcano Explosivity Index, meaning that more than 1,000 cubic kilometers (240 cubic miles) of magma (partially molten rock) are erupted.

A supervolcano is defined as a volcano that ejects more than a trillion tons of material when it erupts.
A supervolcano explosion is about 30 times stronger than the strongest volcanic eruption in recent history, which occurred at Krakatoa.
The difference between volcanoes and supervolcanoes is in the way the magma underneath each comes to the surface.

Supervolcanoes are eruptions and explosions of catastrophic proportions.
There is substantial evidence to show that within the time of the super volcano Toba's eruption in the Indonesian Pacific, the world's population of homo sapiens decreased from over one hundred thousand to less than two thousand, basically because global temperatures dropped five degrees for many years.
The largest `normal` volcanic eruption in recorded history happened in August 1883, on the island of Krakatau situated in the narrow channel that separates the Indonesian islands of Sumatra to the northwest and Java to the southeast.

Volcano - Facts, Information, and Encyclopedia Reference article
Supervolcanoes is the popular term for large volcanoes that usually have a large caldera and can potentially produce devastation on a continental scale and cause major global weather pattern changes.
Since calderas have lifespans sometimes measured in millions of years, a caldera that has not produced an eruption in tens of thousands of years is likely to be considered dormant instead of extinct.
For example, the Yellowstone Caldera (considered a Supervolcano) in Yellowstone National Park is at least 2 million years old and hasn't erupted violently for approximately 640,000 years — although there has been some minor activity as relatively recent as 70,000 years ago.

 Supervolcano
A supervolcano refers to a volcano that produces the largest and most voluminous kinds of eruptions on earth.
The actual explosivity of these eruptions varies, but the sheer volume of extruded magma is immense enough to radically alter the landscape and severely impact global climate for years, with a cataclysmic effect on life.
A two-part television docudrama entitled Supervolcano was shown on BBC ONE on 13 March 2005 and 14 March 2005 in Britain, the Discovery Channel on 10 April 2005 and 11 April 2005 in the United States, and ABC on 14 March 2005 and 27 March 2005 in Australia.

Large igneous provinces are remains of mega-colossal flood basalts that extruded enormous quantities of basaltic lava flat and deep over large areas, even covering entire sections of continents.
Prehistoric flood basalts significantly large enough to form these large igneous provinces have been suspected as causes or contributors to mass extinctions in the past, including the ultra-massive Permian extinction, which killed the majority of all then-living species, and the more famous but smaller Cretaceous extinction that extinguished most of the dinosaurs.

Unlike mere volcanoes such as Mount St. Helens, whose periodic rampages are horrific but at least fairly local, supervolcanoes are monstrous beasts that could smother most of the United States in deadly ash.
The thing with supervolcanoes, apparently, is that most of them are overdue for a major blow-out but scientists can't tell if it will be next week or 150,000 years from now.
Told in flashbacks, we see in nightmarish detail how the unstoppable force of a supervolcano is unleashed and how greater investment in monitoring such things could go a long way to save lives.
