Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Matt Sweeney: Superwolf (2005): Reviews
Superwolf is collaboration in the truest sense of the word, and the talents of the two musicians involved feel revitalized and meaningful in ways that they may not have for some time.
Superwolf is the sound of two artists on the same creative page, both bringing unique abilities to the table and elevating the other's talents as a result.
Superwolf is simultaneously bleak and tender, the kind of album to reveal itself in layers over time.

Superwolf then finishes with the ornate “I Gave You,” a lovely tale of wasted love and rejection that serves as a good closer for such a dark album (much like "Raining in Darling" had been for Darkness).
It’s far too early to say, but I don’t think it would be too far-fetched to see Superwolf as an equivalent to Days in the Wake, Joya, or even the massively underrated Ease Down the Road: not his best work, but certainly a disappointment or even cause for alarm.
Superwolf is the sort of album that should keep the critics and the fans happy until Oldham changes moniker and spits out another masterpiece.

Superwolf's sound quality is a bit more polished than other Bonnie "Prince" Billy releases, displaying Will Oldham's confident, hovering vocals over playfully adorned verses, courtesy of Matt Sweeney.

The Harvard Crimson :: Arts :: Oldham Unleashes ‘Wolf’ at MFA
Bonnie “Prince” Billy (Will Oldham by birth) and Matt Sweeney were at the MFA supporting their recent co-release, “Superwolf,” a triumphantly maudlin recording with lyrics dripping equally with blood and irony.
Drums were an interesting addition to the music, hardly noticeable (if present) on Superwolf, juicing up some of the more charged songs (“My Home is the Sea” and “Goat and Ram” both crescendoed in new ways in the live setting).
Some of the most intriguing moments came after the band had left the stage, only to return for the increasingly requisite encore performance (the second encore is the new encore, after all).

Superwolf is zeker geen tegenvaller, maar de nummers zijn niet beklijvend genoeg om de plaat op het niveau te brengen van 'Ease Down The Road', volgens ons nog steeds het meesterwerk van Oldham.

Bonnie “Prince” Billy & Matt Sweeney: Superwolf [2005] Shaking Through.net: Music: Review
Superwolf is the culmination of Oldham's challenge, a moody folk-rock collection that deals with everything from adultery to anthropomorphism.
Superwolf just might convince those who've had trouble getting over the Bonnie "Prince" hump the encouragement to stick around and appreciate the quiet, intense majesty of Oldham's unordinary vocabulary.
On "Blood Embrace," a nearly eight-minute, slow-boiling epic about a man coming to terms with losing his companion to another, Oldham effectively articulates the near murderous, bestial rage felt by someone losing possession of a lover.

Will Oldham's musical personality is strong and distinct enough that when he collaborates with another artist, with rare exception he firmly takes the lead (whether or not that was the intention).
And while guitarist Matt Sweeney (formerly of Chavez and Zwan) gets equal billing with Oldham's alter ego Bonnie "Prince" Billy on 2005's Superwolf, one listen confirms that this is primarily Oldham's work, with Sweeney obviously second in command.
Even if Oldham ends up being front and center on Superwolf, the results make it clear the man works best with a strong collaborator, and it's hard not to hope Oldham and Sweeney continue to work together in the future.

While the terrain explored on SUPERWOLF is in keeping with past Bonnie "Prince" Billy releases (most directly 1998`s somber, haunting I SEE A DARKNESS and 2003`s hushed, tender MASTER AND EVERYONE), it`s surprising to learn that Sweeney is credited as the sole writer of the album`s music (with Oldham handling the lyrics).
From soft acoustic ballads ("Only Someone Running") to plaintive sing-alongs ("Lift Us Up") to epic tales of heartbreak ("Blood Embrace"), SUPERWOLF is technically a stripped-down affair, yet its impact is far-reaching and expansive.
With SUPERWOLF, Oldham and Sweeney have made an album that plays to both artists` strengths.

However, the lyrics for Superwolf seem a lot less personal than his last few albums (perhaps fitting since having someone else write the music also goes to make it impersonal, despite the generally good job Sweeney does with the music).
In all, the songs seem pleasantly universal, which is a bit of a disappointment given how devastatingly personal Ease Down the Road and, more so, Master and Everyone are.
