 Republic
Man, they knew, was not to be simply a cog in a wheel, or a single cell of an organism, or a branch of a tree, but an individual with a free will and responsibility for his eternal soul as well as his life on earth.
A return to the spirit of the Republic would mean that a draft would never be used and all able-bodied persons would be willing to volunteer in defense of their liberty.

Central to the Consumers’ Republic was the concept of what I call "purchasers as citizens," individuals who, because they were active exercisers of their purchasing power, were, by definition, good citizens as well, delivering social, political, and economic benefits to the nation.
In the Consumers’ Republic, purchasers who bought more, newer, and better were considered good citizens because they kept the engine of mass consumption humming with its promise of far-reaching social, political, and economic rewards for all.
As the Consumers’ Republic evolved into the consumerization of the republic, politicians and voters were quick to reject policies they felt yielded an inadequate personal return on their investment.

How Egalitarian Societies Rein In Potential Despots
Boehm rejects the either-or arguments that have raged over egalitarianism, in which some have insisted that human society is fundamentally hierarchical, or susceptible to control by powerful individuals, and others have argued that it will naturally evolve to become increasingly egalitarian.
Boehm argues that egalitarianism amounts to the overthrow of "alpha males" -- powerful, dominant men -- by rank-and-file members of a society who individually have little power but who, by cooperating with one another, can impose their collective will on the alphas.
"Egalitarian societies constitute a very special type of hierarchy, one in which the rank and file avoid being subordinated by vigilantly keeping alpha-type group members under their collective thumbs," he writes.

The resulting confederation and states were perceived by many American intellectuals as dominated by greed and self-interest, there was an absence of the expected moral regeneration, and there were increasing concerns about the power of state legislatures causing both abuse of minority rights and threats to social order.
This gave government an essentially independent role and represented a form of social engineering because the Federalists essentially depended on constructed institutions to guarantee social success rather than the prior emphasis on public virtue.
The ideas of constitutionialism, large republics, delegation of sovereignty, mixed government with responsibility divided between states and the Federal government, and emphasis on social contracts as a source of authority all stem from this period.

There is a moral, legal, and absolute imperative for an independent-minded Vermont to revert back to its rightful status as the independent republic it was between 1777 and 1791.
It is surrendered only by an express act, and nowhere in the U.S. Constitution is there any express renunciation of sovereignty by the states.
