Suppressor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A suppressor (popularly known as a silencer, although no suppressor "silences" a firearm completely), is a device attached to a firearm to reduce the amount of noise and flash generated by firing the weapon.
The suppressor is typically a hollow cylindrical piece of machined metal that attaches to the muzzle of the pistol or rifle.
Suppressors are most effective to the side and rear of the shooter, so a suppressor could be used by a sniper effectively.

However, "with today's technology and the availability of reliable commercial subsonic ammunition in both 9mm and.22 rimfire, the efficiency of a muzzle suppressor is comparable to that of an integral suppressor."¹ Integral suppressors are built-in components of a given weapon and as such are not designed to be removed except in case of cleaning.
These types of suppressors are particularly easy to clean because the grease tends to mix with powder residue and coat the inside of the suppressor as shots are fired.
Because suppressors are designed to capture propellant gases and release them slowly into the atmosphere, the usual "punch" of high-velocity gases against the weapon's muzzle are reduced to what could be called a "push." Also, the sheer mass of the suppressor will help to reduce movement at the muzzle.

RedOrbit - Science - An Integrated View of Suppressor T Cell Subsets in Immunoregulation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
In this regard, the idea that suppressor T cells may be critical to the control of virtually all immune responses arose in the laboratory of Richard Gershon at Yale University in the late 1960s in studies of immune tolerance to foreign antigens.
The first models of the pathways by which suppressor T cells might function in the specific regulation of immunity arose from the seminal studies by Cantor and Boyse, who showed that genetically well-defined alloantisera could be used to identify phenotypically stable and functionally distinct subsets of T cells.
Finally, the idea that clinical induction of suppressor mechanisms may be important in the control of immunologie disease was conceived in the early days of the study of suppressor T cells.

 Gemtech M4-96D
Suppressors shown with or designed for machine guns are rated for fully automatic fire.
In the case of suppressors designed for.223 (5.56mm), there are some limitations in the duration of fully automatic fire due to shortcomings in the ammunition, not the suppressor.
Although the suppressor is capable of withstanding long bursts using ammunition not containing any lead, any lead containing 5.56mm ammunition will damage the suppressor.

Tumor Suppressor Genes: Guardians of Our Cells
One of the functions of the tumor suppressor gene p53 is to prevent cells with damaged DNA from dividing and passing on the DNA damage to daughter cells.
If a mutated tumor suppressor gene is already present in the sperm of the father or egg of the mother, this genetic damage can be passed on to their children.
Some tumor suppressor proteins function as a braking signal that stops the cell cycle when a cell with DNA damage is detected and needs to be repaired.

ACS :: Oncogenes and Tumor Suppressor Genes
Tumor suppressor genes are normal genes that slow down cell division, repair DNA mistakes, and tell cells when to die (a process known as apoptosis or programmed cell death).
A tumor suppressor gene is like the brake pedal on a car – it normally keeps the cell from dividing too quickly just as a brake keeps a car from going too fast.
Several mutations in oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes have been found often enough to be useful in helping decide which people are at higher risk for developing certain types of cancers.

What is surge suppressor? - a definition from Whatis.com - see also: surge protector
A surge suppressor (sometimes optimistically called a "surge protector") is a device inserted in the alternating current (AC) utility line and/or telephone line to prevent damage to electronic equipment from voltage "spikes" called transients.
Surge suppressors should be used as a matter of habit with all semiconductor-based electronic and computer hardware, including peripherals such as printers, monitors, external disk drives, and modems.
The safest procedure, inconvenient though it be, is to ensure that all susceptible hardware is plugged into the suppressor box, and to unplug the suppressor's main power cord when the equipment is not in use if you live in a thunderstorm-prone area.

Natural tumor suppressor in body discovered by UCSD medical researchers
Alexandra C. Newton, Ph.D. A natural tumor suppressor that could potentially be turned on in certain cancer cells to prevent the formation of tumors has been discovered by researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine.
Akt can be inactivated by two mechanisms: the tumor suppressor PTEN pre-empts activation by removing the activating signals, and the tumor suppressor PHLPP terminates activation by directly turning off a key phosphorylation switch on Akt.
The scientists noted that PHLPP's role as a tumor suppressor would apply to all cancers where Akt is elevated, "which is a large number of cancers," Newton said.

The suppressor cells keep increasing, however, until there are enough of them to stop the virus.

Since suppressor cells normally respond to helper cells, killing the helper cells may also reduce the number of suppressors, reducing the ability to stop the virus.

Tumor suppressor gene - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A tumor suppressor gene is a gene that reduces the probability that a cell in a multicellular organism will turn into a tumor cell.
Unlike oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes generally follow the 'two-hit hypothesis,' which implies that both alleles that code for a particular gene must be affected before an effect is manifested.
Tumor suppressor genes, or more precisely, the proteins for which they code, either have a dampening or repressive effect on the regulation of the cell cycle or promote apoptosis, and sometimes do both.

Newly Identified Tumor Suppressor Cooperates With - National Cancer Institute
In a study published in the Aug. 8, 2003, issue of the journal Cell*, the researchers demonstrate that reducing or eliminating the H2AX gene in mice that lack p53, a well-known tumor suppressor gene, causes an increase in the number of tumors that develop.
Thus, unlike "classical" tumor suppressors, in which loss of both copies of the gene is necessary for tumor development, partial loss of H2AX function predisposes mice to tumor formation.
In many human tumors, the region of DNA that includes the H2AX gene is missing, suggesting that H2AX may play a similar role in protecting against the development of human cancers.
