To prevent the occurrence of suppuration with all its attendant risks was an object manifestly desirable, but till lately apparently unattainable, since it seemed hopeless to attempt to exclude the oxygen which was universally regarded as the agent by which putrefaction was effected.
The surgeon is extremely apt to suppose that any suppuration is an indication that the antiseptic treatment has failed, and that poulticing or water dressing should be resorted to.
Here the abscesses, instead of forming exceptions to the general class in the obstinacy of the suppuration, have resembled the rest in yielding in a few days only a trifling discharge, and frequently the production of pus has ceased from the moment of the evacuation of the original contents.

Left ear mastoidectomy residuals are manifested by complaints of intermittent suppuration and discharge, and by left ear hearing loss disability, which is manifested by an average left ear pure tone threshold of 50 decibels and by left ear speech recognition of 94 percent.
Suppuration, in turn, is evaluated under the criteria set forth in Diagnostic Code 6200 of the Schedule, by which a 10 percent rating is warranted during the continuance of the suppurative process.
We find that this evidence is sufficient to demonstrate that left ear suppuration is currently manifested, and that a 10 percent rating is appropriate for that disability.

The Internet Classics Archive | On Ulcers by Hippocrates
A sore suppurates when the blood is changed and becomes heated; so that becoming putrid, it constitutes the pus of such ulcers.
When you seem to require a cataplasm, it is not the ulcer itself to which you must apply the cataplasm, but to the surrounding parts, so that the pus may escape and the hardened parts may become soft.
In every recent ulcer, except in the belly, it is expedient to cause blood to flow from it abundantly, and as may seem seasonable; for thus will the wound and the adjacent parts be less attacked with inflammation.

Sir Alexander Ogston - The Ogston Society
He was appointed ophthalmic surgeon at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in 1868 and must have had many disappointing results due to postoperative sepsis in the operations he performed.
Alexander Ogston became a convert to this method and showed that by meticulous antiseptic treatment of everything that touched the surgical wound, the incidence of suppuration and hence patient mortality was greatly reduced.
Professor Ogston often pondered on the cause of acute suppuration and through his own research he discovered the cause to be an organism he called STAPHLOCOCCUS PYOGENES AUREUS.

Thomas' Eclectic Practice of Medicine, 1907: Diseases of the Salivary Glands: Inflammation of the Salivary Glands.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Definition.—As the name suggests, this is a secondary inflammation of the parotid gland, with greater tendency to suppuration than in specific parotitis or mumps.
Treatment.—The cause being septic conditions of the blood, the treatment will very naturally be the administration of antiseptics; hence, echinacea, in five to- ten drop doses, will fit many cases.
If we see that suppuration can not be prevented, moist, hot applications should be made, hastening the process, when it should be freely opened and treated aseptically as any other abscess.
