The rational construction of structurally controlled supramolecular assemblies (e.g., noncentrosymmetric and chiral solids) remains a great challenge.
Preliminary results on chiral sensing using these supramolecular systems have been very encouraging: enantiopure metallo-cycles and -cages tend to exhibit much higher enantioselectivity than their chiral building blocks, presumably a result of better-defined chiral environments conferred by the supramolecular assemblies.
These discrete chiral supramolecular systems with nanoscopic dimensions will be subsequently incorporated into macroporous organic polymers to obtain hybrid materials that are exploitable for practical chiral sensing, separation, and catalysis.
