The ciliary ganglion is connected with the ophthalmic nerve; the sphenopalatine ganglion with the maxillary nerve; and the otic and submaxillary ganglia with the mandibular nerve.
Nerves of the orbit, and the ciliary ganglion.
It passes forward on the lateral side of the optic nerve, and enters the postero-superior angle of the ciliary ganglion; it is sometimes joined by a filament from the cavernous plexus of the sympathetic, or from the superior ramus of the trochlear nerve.

VI. The Arteries. 3a. 4. The Internal Carotid Artery. Gray, Henry. 1918. Anatomy of the Human Body.
It is in relation, behind, with the Longus capitis, the superior cervical ganglion of the sympathetic trunk, and the superior laryngeal nerve; laterally, with the internal jugular vein and vagus nerve, the nerve lying on a plane posterior to the artery; medially, with the pharynx, superior laryngeal nerve, and ascending pharyngeal artery.
As the artery crosses the optic nerve it is accompanied by the nasociliary nerve, and is separated from the frontal nerve by the Rectus superior and Levator palpebræ superioris.
At the supraorbital foramen it frequently transmits a branch to the diploë.

Endoscopic Forehead and Facelift: Step By Step
Because the supratrochlear nerve is in a plane slightly inferior to the supraorbital nerve, it is not readily accessible at this point.
While the supraorbital nerve is being protected and the tip of the nerve protector is being used as a guiding element, we proceed with the endoscopic grasper to spread the fibers of the corrugator muscle to identify the supratrochlear nerve.
To continue the resection of the corrugator, the nerve protector is moved again to retract the supraorbital nerve and the remains of the corrugator muscle medial to the supraorbital nerve and in between, fascicles of the supratrochlear nerves are excised using either the grasper or the bitter.

Trigeminal nerve   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
The trigeminal nerve is the fifth (V) cranial nerve, and carries sensory information from most of the face, as well as motor supply to the muscles ofmastication (the muscels enabling chewing), tensor tympani (in the ear) and other muscles in the floor of the mouth.
The sensory trigeminal nerve nucleus is the largest of the cranialnerve nuclei, and extends through the whole of the brainstem, midbrain to medulla.
Trigeminal neuralgia is an example of a disorder of thetrigeminal nerve where the sufferer suffers pain in the territory of the trigeminal nerve innervation.

 Headaches Revisited
Like the supraorbital nerve, it can be injured years before the headaches start, and can present as menstrual headaches or classical/common migraines.
Temple headaches are often due to entrapment of the auriculotemporal nerve, a third division trigeminal nerve which leaves the foramen ovale and then travels in front of the TMJ (innervating the joint as it goes by) to pierce the temporalis muscle.
These nerves pierce the nuchal fascia at the base of the skull and are therefore prone to trauma from flexion/extension injuries as well as entrapment by spasm of the trapezius muscle.

At its termination, the nerve lies beneath the Quadratus labii superioris, and divides into a leash of branches which spread out upon the side of the nose, the lower eyelid, and the upper lip, joining with filaments of the facial nerve.
It lies at first beneath the Pterygoideus externus, medial to and in front of the inferior alveolar nerve, and is occasionally joined to this nerve by a branch which may cross the internal maxillary artery.
The fibers from the glossopharyngeal which pass to the otic ganglion in the small superficial petrosal are supposed to be sympathetic efferent (preganglionic) fibers from the dorsal nucleus or inferior salivatory nucleus of the medulla.

Nerve and root innervations are messy and promiscuous, overlapping with their neighbors and showing great variability.
Under normal circumstances, the supraorbital artery is supplied by blood from the ophthalmic artery and the intracranial carotid system.
This is due to the action of the superior oblique muscle (innervated by the fourth cranial nerve), which inserts on the top of the eye.

Experimental implant under the scalp zaps away crippling headaches
He hooked a tiny electrode to a needle and tunneled it under the skin by Lamesch's left eye, stopping atop the nerve responsible for her pain.
Now a few doctors are exploring how well nerve stimulators implanted in different spots along the head could rid some of that crippling, nerve-caused pain.
Nerve stimulation "has done wonders for this kind of a headache," agrees Amin, an anesthesiologist and pain specialist at Chicago's Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center, who implanted Lamesch and another patient who suffered unrelieved headaches after brain surgery.

Blink reflexes were obtained after unilateral electric stimulation of the supraorbital nerve for quantitative analysis of 3 responses, early ipsilateral (R1), late ipsilateral (R2i) and late contralateral (R2c), obtained from the orbicularis oculi muscle.
Supposedly, an increase in the sagital diameter of the cranial vault could correspond to a similar increase in the afferent volley, as the supraorbital nerve follows a retilineal antero-posterior descending to the brainstem.
Likewise, a reduction in the transversal diameter of the cranial vault could be associated with a corresponding reduction of the efferent portion of the arc, as the facial nerve follows a latero- caudal route in a significant segment of its anatomy.

Often a group of nerves, called a plexus or ganglion, that causes pain to a specific organ or body region can be blocked with the injection of medication into a specific area of the body.
For example, a nerve block may be performed to determine if more permanent treatments (such as surgery) to block the activity of a nerve would be successful in treating pain.
Below are a few of the available nerve blocks, followed in parentheses by some of the parts of the body for which they are used.
