Abyss : JMS Comics : Supreme Power : Index
Originally titled "Squadron Supreme" in its working stages, it is now called "Supreme Power" which is a new project that J. Michael Straczynski is working on for Marvel.
Plus, it serves as a sort of introduction to this comic in case you are new to the universe of "Squadron Supreme".
The one problem with the original Squadron Supreme is that it grew to so many characters that you almost lost track of them after a while.

Supreme (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Supreme's history varied from story to story; at one point, he was an extremely religious angel of vengeance, who cited scripture to justify his actions.
Supreme spent decades in space, fighting against various threats on the side of an alien race named the Katellans, but he eventually returned to Earth in 1992 to find a greatly changed human society, complete with genetically enhanced superpowered humans that could be found in teams like Youngblood and Heavy Mettle.
As Supreme fought the Norse god Thor over the possession of the enchanted hammer Mjolnir, another character by the name of Enigma acquired another Supreme from an alternate timeline, to be kept in storage in case Supreme was defeated.

Recycling Bin 02 - Recycling the Competition (Feb 1999)
Marvel had created new comics concepts and rubbed the point in with an entirely new slant on superhero comics relying less on the role-model/iconic nature of their heroes and more upon the human faces of their superhero stable.
Supreme's canon includes versions of the Phantom Zone, of Krypto the super-dog, of Supergirl (the original), of the bottle city Kandor, and of the Justice League.
Granted, the character Supreme sometimes put a new twist on this derivative material; or, during particularly grotesque phases of the "new comics" fad, ignored his roots altogether and behaved as a super-powered serial killer.

The comics magazine, or as it is more popularly known, the comic book medium, having come of age on the American culture scene, must measure up to its responsibilities.
Comic books have also made their contribution in the field of social commentary and criticism of contemporary life.
No comics shall explicitly present the unique details and methods of a crime, with the exception of those crimes that are so farfetched or pseudo-scientific that no would-be lawbreaker could reasonably duplicate.

It may be a sign of how far comics have not come in the eyes of society that the courts seem to still be having trouble figuring this out.
But a ruling June 2 by the California Supreme Court in Los Angeles affirming dismissal of the defamation suit against the publisher and creators of the Jonah Hex miniseries Riders of the Worm and Such suggests that comics may be finally getting a little respect.
Comic Book Legal Defense Fund Executive Director Charles Brownstein also feels the most important issue in the case has already been decided by the Supreme Court.

Michael Straczynski, is shaped by two events, similar but with marked differences, which occurred in the world of superhero comics in the 1980s.
Gruenwald was a classic "company man:" Superhero comics were his life's work, and that kind of outlook isn't generally looked upon as progressive.
But Squadron Supreme made a significant advance in the genre, despite the fact that it took place (for the safety of Marvel's continuity) in an alternate reality, and starred a cast of minor Marvel characters who were essentially knock-offs of DC's iconic Justice League of America.

Supreme is a thickly muscled, larger-than-life supreme being complete with supersister Suprema, superdog Radar, extra- terrestrial creation myth, citadel of solitude, alliterative archnemesis (Darius Dax) and girlfriends (Judy Jordan and Dana Dane), and secret identity.
Supreme is Moore's big dig, a Möbius-strip time warp looping endlessly between superhero comics' hypermuscular present (female breasts are bigger and better than ever before, too) and their earlier, more modest, naive, and charming incarnations.
Comics may be ultimately disposable, but what Moore has done with the medium's mulch guarantees lasting import.

Supreme Power is off to an excellent start, and it marks a high point for the comic-book writing of Straczynski and the quality of the loosely-grouped MAX imprint, matching up to its impressive sales numbers with a solid debut.
And including a reprint of the first Squadron Supreme story seems wrong-headed; it's obviously material that isn't aimed at the crowd that's going to pick up this new take on the characters, and all it does is reinforce these old versions that the creators are so clearly trying to get away from.
Given how strong a foundation the creative team has built, and how different all of these characters are from their Squadron Supreme origins, it seems like the creators would have been better off shedding the original inspiration altogether once they saw the direction in which their minds were working.

Ninth Art - The Friday Review: Supreme: The Story Of The Year
There, Supreme is informed of his origins - and his possible future, which he chooses to explore, thus setting up the dramatic arc for the stories collected here.
Quite rightly, Moore's SUPREME is seen as a precursor to his ABC line, specifically what he would go on to attempt in the pages of TOM STRONG and TOP TEN - to hark back to a time when comics were seen as 'imagination reactors' and not simply disposable kiddie fodder.
TOP TEN works on a deeper level as a meta-critique of the superhero comic, and the quieter moments in STORY OF THE YEAR showcase the beginnings of this line of thought, as we witness the exchanges between Ethan Crane and his Dazzle Comics co-workers.

Supreme Power was always a reimagining (similar to the Ultimate Marvel Universe) of the original Squadron Supreme series from Marvel Comics years ago.
Supreme Power, in a sense, acted as a prequel story that set the players in motion, so that they can now come together in the new series.
Basically, the original 1970s Squadron Supreme team was a sort of homage by Marvel writer Roy Thomas to the classic DC Comics team known as the Justice League.

Squadron Supreme: Encyclopedia II - Squadron Supreme - The Utopia Project
This series was well-promoted and fairly popular, and the fact that Marvel Comics was publishing a series which was at best a thinly-veiled shadow of the Justice League was occasionally commented on, although no legal action occurred.
It is widely held to have been Gruenwald's magnum opus: after his sudden death in 1997, he was cremated, and his ashes were blended with the ink used to print the first collected edition of the series (subsequent printings of the collected edition have been ash-free).
Following this series, Gruenwald wrote the graphic novel, Squadron Supreme: Death of a Universe, a Crisis-analog in which the Squadron, reeling from the climax of their Utopia Program, must contend with a huge creature which seems bent on destroying the universe.

comics Forum - Article - Review of Alan Moore's Supreme - by Guy Lawley
Moore begins in 41 with Supreme returning to Earth from space, only to find that the planet is apparently phasing in and out with a second version of itself.
Following his experience in Comic Hero Limbo, the new “avatar” of Supreme returns to earth, where he finds that his memories of his own past are very vague.
In the last few issues, the original brilliance of the series has dulled down a bit, maybe because Moore is hard at work on the forthcoming revamp of the Liefeld/Maximum Press universe, or partly because the novelty has simply worn off.
